PSVR Support at launch?

Hi all, new here but ive been playing ED on PC & Xbox for some time now. The Idea of jumping in new with my friends on ps4 has me looking to buy the game yet again but I'm wondering if VR support is planned for launch or at all?

Thanks!

Not for launch is confirmed. Other than that no confirmation.

“It’s something we would love to be able to support, but we have nothing to announce right now. From a technical standpoint, Elite Dangerous is one of the PC’s most high-end VR titles, pushing even very powerful PCs to their limit. We would want to hit our own high benchmark for quality on PlayStation 4.”

HOWEVER.... Doesn't PSVR also offer a simulated giant 80 inch screen for games that don't support PSVR? I think this even works if you plug PSVR into the XBox or a DVD player. While obviously not the same as true VR, it might still be cool to play ED on an "80 inch screen", especially an OLED screen! I think space will look extra great on OLED.

Question - what's the resolution of this simulated screen? I'm guessing it's less than the total resolution of the PSVR.

You can set the size of the cinematic mode screen to different sizes.

In theory it sounds great, a huge screen, a private cinema almost, but in reality the resolution is quite low. Playing on a 4k television is much, much more fun than PSVR in cinematic mode.

PSVR resolution isn't that great in VR mode too, but you forget about it quickly because you're constantly looking around and you really get a sense of depth and space.

I had a feeling this might be the case. How about for movie watching? Is it at least DVD quality, or not even?

I actually play on a high-quality computer monitor. I've only owned 1080p TVs, but I much prefer my monitor to the TV, especially for the sharpness and full RGB color. AND, when a monitor is inches away, it takes up the same FOV as a huge TV on the wall.

Hmm didn't try that. I quickly disregarded cinematic mode after playing some games in it. Let me play some movie on it later today and report back ;)

Just tried watching Netflix on PSVR. It is 'kinda' cool. There are 3 'sizes' you can set the cinematic mode to:

Small: smallest screen that is always in center of your view. So when your head turns, the screens turns with you.
Not the most pleasant mode, cause when you want to look more to the edge of the screen, it moves with you... unless you keep your head straight and look at the corners moving your eyes only.

Medium: This is like a big screen on the wall, and it stays 'in place' when you move your head. So it's easier to look at another part of the screen than just the center. Feels like a cinema, just lower resolution. You really miss details in facial expression or moving images. This mode was 'ok'-ish for watching a movie.

Large: HUGE screen on the wall, very hard to watch a movie in this mode. It's like sitting on the front row in the cinema (I don't like that).

Was it DVD quality? no
Would I watch movies using PSVR cinematic mode? Only if the main television is already in use and I really, really want to watch that movie! But probably I would be fine waiting for my turn to use the television later on...

For VR gaming I still think it is very cool! For movie watching or playing games in cinematic mode, mehhh

yeah they have quoted a few times now that PSVR is not supported at launch. I love PSVR but I am beginning to wander whether a game of this quality could be produced on it. I am already a bit unhappy about the resolution that PSVR provides with its games. I know it draws the max from the PS4 and it's amazing that it has the capability, but it kinda justs makes it and no more. That's why most of the real quality games are mega short, disapointing,i know, but not sure if I would want a lame VR version of the game.

think it would be best to wait for PS5

Yeah, while I'm not clambering for 4K, I do very much prefer a well-encoded, sharp hi-def 1080p BluRay over DVD or streaming video. It sounds like PSVR would disappoint me on the resolution front. However, I am patient, and someday a PS5 with PSVR2 will come out, ED will support it, and I will love it :D

Me too. Think I prefer resolution over immersion.

I would not watch a movie on my Vr headset, But I picked up Spiderman 2 in 3D and really enjoyed watching it in 3D on the medium screen. I think it was a great experience. While I cant replace the sharpness of the 1080P Plasma TV. VR allows me to add 3D and many of the 3D movies have been discounted. SpiderMan 2 was only $10 on Amazon. i would say stay away from the $29 3D movies and look for something you would enjoy watching for $10-$15. I will be buying more as I find the right movies at the right price.

Even if the PS4 Pro could handle ED in VR, I doubt that the standard PS4 could - and AFAIK Sony doesn't allow PSVR games to be Pro-only :(

Sadly I think this ^^^ is the problem. Assuming the OG PS4 can play non-VR ED stablely, that means the extra GPU in the Pro should do VR fine. It's the OG PS4 which would hold things back. Unless FDev can weasel in something like "PS4 original does 720p@60fps or 1080p@30fps" or whatever, and then convince Sony "PS4 Pro offers the other modes or checkerbox 4K, or 1080p@60-fps or VR" as Pro-only options...

VR is amazing for Elite, and yes with a half-decent PC you can use the PSVR on PC:

I so hope we get VR on PS4 (Pro)!
