PSVR

There is literally bucket loads of us, waiting for that magical PSVR update - Please make this a sticky so us PS4 owners with PSVR can show our support for the device by posting that they really really really (really!) want this working - so FDEV can see how desperately we need to be immersed inside the game. Please !

PSVR owners or even potential owners who would just buy the device off the back of knowing PSVR will be supported by ED in the near future - just post below that you want this amazing game - running on your headset.

Yay! Another PSVR thread in which to express my enthusiasm and commitment to the platform! :)

With Skyrim coming out next week, there is gonna be huge spotlight on the PSVR once again. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the lovely, intelligent and attractive folks at Frontier were to capitalise on this swell of interest and reward us loyal PSVR owning star pilots with some kind of elucidatory commentary on their PSVR efforts thus far?

PSVR is exactly the reason I bought this game in the first place.

Doh! Just kidding - i too was excited about the proposect of ED being a PSVR title - alas it is not to be!

Now - I really would rather they work on the base game and get it 'up to spec' before even attempting this maneouvre otherwise its gonna be a graphic nightmare and make me more hacked off. A half baked 12 inch cake is worse than a well baked 6 inch cake - in my opinion.

I agree. A comment from Frontier is all I'm waiting for to keep my loyal!

I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago asking for the same thing. I said then that I had only ever put so many hours into Skyrim as I've put into ED. So with Skyrim VR out next week I am not expecting to continue playing ED as much. In fact as of writing this I haven't played ED since Sunday as I have been playing Eve and Farpoint! (I still hate spiders, I wonder what a frost spider will look like in bleak falls barrow!?)

So come on @Frontier. Where is it? With deep VR titles finally coming to the PS4 you're gonna miss out. If a competitor space sim game launches on PSVR you could lose a large number of players.

And Fallout 4 VR is coming next year to!

An finally I fully expect a bunch of comment from people who haven't used PSVR about how "the PS4 just isn't powerful enough!" Frankly thats rubbish. If it can run "Eve Valkyrie" at an acceptable frame rate and resolution it can run ED.

The general response to VR games is that devs don't want to sacrifice quality and expect it to be the same.

Fact is, this is the first generation of real VR, you won't get the exact same quality off the bat, but any VR player who wants this will happily tell you that we'll take the reduction in quality if that's what it takes, the immersion alone more than makes up for any losses.

Plus I don't see it being much of an issue, I mean it's mostly empty space right, not that much detail to render.

I second this post. at the moment im considering buying PSVR in the next few weeks. i really would love it if this game could support PSVR, i believe i mentioned in another thread the same question.. if PSVR can run eve why cant it run ED.I was advised by someone that it may be better off not buying psvr (and a new PS4 Pro) and putting the money towards a PC Gaming rig and VR. But another of the factors im looking into psvr is so i can have friends round so we can all laugh at each other while on it. i just dont feel id have the say enjoyment if i bought a pc VR system

Disappointed with the PS4 version

After playing this game on PC I'm can say that I am very disappointed with the PS4 version, PSVR being just one feature. Haven't played for quiet some time. There are now so many great games on PS4 that utilize all the PS4 pro's capabilities. :)

It's not happening. Except it already people...

Oh okay, if you say so. I didn't realise FD has confirmed this. Can you please direct us to where they said it and what they said? We're all so desperate for information regarding this, I'm amazed that we missed it. I guess you must have insider information or something.

Technically the PSVR not being able to do Elite is simply hearsay talk.

FDev can't just snap their fingers and have PSVR working all fine and dandy. It takes development time to make it work and they obviously rather spend that time on other things instead of answering every thread that pops up about it.

I was first a ED PSVR champion (just ask the guys who were around pre-launch), then I became a skeptic, but as I've studied ED's graphics under a magnifying glass after 2.4 released, I'm actually swinging back to believing it can be done, but it would take a lot of work. ED has a tremendous amount of geometric detail in it, and a lot of this detail could be reduced to textures and still look "good". However, removing detail can be just as time-consuming as adding detail, since you have to replace complex geometric shapes with simpler ones that still look good. This already happens to some extent with LOD transitions, but I don't know if Frontier were to use the lowest LOD currently available in-game, if it would be low enough to perform well on PSVR and look good close up.

BTW - there's things about VR that I don't understand. For example, will a bump-map texture translate into stereoscopic 3D automatically? If not, that changes things as well, because then you can't "cheat" 3D like you can on a flat screen, at least not up close.

Duck, if you can try the battlefront vr mission you will be a believer (resolution is not important, it's the overall immersion in the game that does it for me).

Basicaaly what needs to be done to generate a frame for any VR image is to render the same frame twice with sglightly offset camera view. This might sound as been double the work compared to none VR but it isn‘t. At then end of the day graphics performance still is number of polygons that need to be rendered to a certain resolutiom. For one it makes no sense to use very high polygon models for rendering low res views, secondly rendering a HD image for each eye is a total waste of time if your glasses are not even able to display half of that resolution natively. An to answer your questions, no there is no need for extra mapping’s the available ones will do.

so one thing to do would be to reduce Polygone count of the models by at least 50% ( wich you would not recognize ) second would be to reduce the canvas to the native resolution of the display inside the google. Then you only need to render two different camera positions within the time you would do one standard HD view. Usually there is some overhead with operations like this but in general if you crunch the numbers it is demanding but not so much more then you would thing compared to normal 2D rendering at higher resolution.

more of the problem is there are three kinds of persons when it comes to PSVR

first those how never used one nor ever tried on, these guys know for sure it does not work!

second the ones that get sick playing VR, these know it will not be good enough! ( sorry guys to tell but you will get sick with 240hz 4K Display as well, it’s your brain making you feel sick not the glasses)

third the ones that actually own an PSVR and use it, these will tell you that it might need some optimization’s but there is no reason for it not to work.

Don't forget you also need a steady 60 FPS for those two images (which PSVR 'upscales' to 90 fps IIRC). My PS4 rarely hits 60 fps in ED, and it's not uncommon for it to dip to 20 or even 15 fps at times.
