So, ignoring the fact that ED won't work on VR - is it worth it? Is this year the year to fork out for VR? has anyone used it with lasting fun?

I bought a PSVR with Gran Turimso this past Christmas...

I like it. It's fun to play. But it has its limitations. The graphics aren't quite there - you become near-sighted in some of the games. Far away things start to take on a screendoor effect and look blurry, while up-close things look pretty detailed. The most immersive games, for me, anyway - are the third-party view games where you're controlling a character on the landscape and things are kind of close-quartered. ie: the "Moss" demo on the demo disc and the "Robot Rescue" game that comes with the VR Playroom. In those games you can lean in, look around objects, and almost feel like you can reach out and touch the characters and you get a real sense of the space around you. In Gran Turismo, you get a sense of motion (I'm only good for about two races before I start feeling queasy) but I feel like I'm driving without my glasses.

I downloaded the VR mission for Battlefront where you get to fly an X-Wing, also. The cockpit looks very cool, and you really do get a sense of scale while flying around asteroids albeit kind of blurry asteroids. However, I had trouble picking out distant TIE fighters during the dogfight as well as judging their distance. I suspect I'd have similar issues spotting things in ED.

I'd still like to play ED on it, though. :)

The prices are dropping on the first version headsets (the newer versions support HDR, I guess). I got mine with the game for $250.. and I've seen cheaper since.

Playstation is really pushing to get these things out there. And, once game developers start to get creative and push the limits of the thing, you'll see much more cooler stuff available.

Im wondering it it isn't worth waiting for the PS5 and / or the next PSVR iteration.

I have a PSVR with a pro and I must say I love it. My best games are Resident Evil which is awesome and scary, Skyrim is loads of fun with Move controllers even though it looks like a PS3 game, and Bridge Crew is an awesome experience if your a fan of Trek although single player is limited to 6 missions and randomly generated.

Don’t expect mind blowing graphics but the immersion factor more than makes up for it for me. We have Wipeout VR coming for free soon if you already have the game. I hear great things about Dirt Rally if you like rally driving. There’s a lot of games by smaller developers as well although some of them aren’t quite short. What it is lacking is more AAA games but they will come.

You can also watch movies on a big screen and also 3D movies if you have them. I prefer to watch 3D on my PSVR than at the cinema as it seems to have better depth.

It’s a big investment but it is a new level of gaming and flat games seem to be missing something once you have VR. It really is the future of gaming, we’re just in a period where developers are still figuring out what works best on the platform.

It works. It's simple. It's fun. If there are games you would enjoy playing on it, then it's worth getting. I played a lot of Skyrim on it, for example.

It's not perfect, but for what it is, it's pretty damn good and on par with the other VR sets out there. They all basically have different tradeoffs, whether you're going for the Vive, Occulus, PSVR or WMR.

It's still in its infancy, and thus has a way to go before it's the thing to have and everyone will get on that wagon. And just like now, where as there are those that will buy the newest versions regardless of there cost and have bugs because new ones always do; Complain about them. Thus the rest of us will either wait for a newer more improved version an hope it's better or buy the now cheaper previous version.

I generally prefer to wait and buy the previous version knowing what all the bugs are and having most of the upgrades that fixed them in place. Rather than buying the newest bestest, fastest etc.

Those that have spent or invested already in the virtual industry, are to be complimented for their endevors. Though I can afford it, being on the fore front of buy and trying new technology is not my cup of tea. Assuming I drink tea, which I don't.

The virtual industry has come a long way, and has a farther way to go before it will become and I know it will, the main stream of the video game industry. Until then, my hat is off to anyone who is willing to invest the time and epensense in future growth of the virtual gaming world.

Thing is, there currently aren't that many titles that i like the look of to convince me. Maybe by the end of the year there will be. I can see GT as being a great game on VR for sure, Skyrim - yeah as an immersive game but to be frank, i didn't LOVE the original - i dislike the blockiness and the stuttering movements etc. It just wasn't a finished product game for me and i fear playing it in VR will just peeve me off even further.

I think it will be great for FP adventure games or simulators like ED - for me anyways.

It makes sense to wait if there’s not that many games that appeal to you at the moment. Skyrim is the same as before really but with the added fun of using move controllers for weapons / magic, which is a massive upgrade in my opinion and just appreciating the scale of everything. GT is barely a VR game as it’s just a single race against 1 car. Not the full game in VR but Dirt Rally is meant to be excellent if you like driving games. I have drive club which is a lot of fun but graphics aren’t anything special. Super hot is really popular among PSVR users. Resident Evil is still the best looking game for me. It takes horror to a new level though, very intense!

Wipeout should be a lot of fun as it’s the full game. That’s not due until June but free for people who own the game. Also from what I hear the gun controller is meant to be loads of fun if you like Doom. But it’s even more money and they can be difficult to get hold of or at least they used to be.

By the end of the year there should be plenty more games. The PSVR reddit is always a good place to get reviews, opinions and info on upcoming games as well.

Regardless of the titles available I advise waiting for a sale, so by next Black Friday you should know what titles are on the horizon that might hold your interest. Sales were exceptionally good for the PSVR this past year so I highly expect more titles being developed and ported.

Great advice.
I bought my HOTAS4 last black Friday for $45.

Ace Combat 7 will allegedly be supporting PSVR in a limited manner.
