PUBG vs. The Thargoids

Hi Folks,

didn't play Elite for months. Coming back now after downloading 2.4 is kind of a cold water bucket challenge. Almost everything I "feared" got reality.

The Thargoids update is what I did not want it to be. A new ship class with different textures and a bit of harry potter ping ping and .... not more. No new game mechanics got introduced, no new gameplay or anything alike got added. It's the same game with a new ship class and new weapons that we have to get via CGs and whatsoever. At least via CG so far, that makes the OPEN aspect more important. +1 for FDev here. I hope there is not any grind element coming up like The Engineers to get what we need to fight back.

But ... I was hoping for a bit more story driven content, with ingame storytelling and such ... As the game and gameplay mechanics did not change at all, it was very important to me to pepp the game up with some gameplay elements towards an goal. Why does FDev not at least tell us a story here that we can follow.

PS. As for PUBG ... The needle is sticking very deep in my arm. Can't stop playing ... Hardly saw any more motivating PvP gameplay.

Brand new mechanics and gameplay seems like something to be expected from a full version expansion (2.0 / 3.0 / etc.), and not .xx release.
I personally can't really think of any game that consistently adds entirely new game mechanics on a .xx release.

So I'm kinda curious as to what kind of new gameplay you were expecting?

I'm also wondering how the way you fight the Thargoids, and the various ways you can interact with them isn't new gameplay?

I was away for a few months as well. Came back after 2.4 dropped. After a few interesting encounters with the Thargoids I soon realised how shallow this game can be in terms of believe-ability. Here I am in a system with hundreds of non human USS, and what are the locals doing? Well they have a civil war going on. What does Galnet say? nothing. So basically the Thargoid activity is being ignored. Frontier need to start putting some meat on the bones. If I drop into a weapons fire USS and fight pirates, the cops usually show up, so where are they when I'm fighting a Thargoid?

I still love the game, and at least the docking computer got fixed for most people. It doesn't speed inside the station, and it doesn't wobble the ship on approach. I don't do missions since hitting triple Elite, just a simple old bounty hunter.

Thargoids are a new level of challenge within existing Elite Dangerous gameplay mechanics, and from what I have seen it is pretty impressive and challenging.

I don't quite understand the call for new gameplay within an existing established game, surely the answer is play another game if you don't like the existing mechanics. Making an existing game more challenging and interesting though, I think Fdev have hit the nail on the head with 2.4 and there is still more to come - I for one cannot wait for the new levels of challenge.

Oh, I can totally see how that can fall under the same category. Especially if we follow a very strict definition of new gameplay — as in "entirely new or unique" compared to the basic flying your spaceship game.

Spacelegs would add 'entirely new game mechanics'

Atmospheric landings would not add entirely new mechanics, as it will still fall in under the premise of "flying your ship". But it will certainly add depth to the flight mechanics if the ship handles differently.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

In all seriousness, there does seem to be a lot hidden under the bonnet of 2.4. Things are being discovered everyday since 2.4 hit and judging by Frontiers comments, the story will roll for a while.

Im enjoying so much, ive missed out on chicken dinners since release.

The patch has been out for three days. You think the complete narrative should be over by now?

If I were to judge PUBG after 1min of playing I'd also not be happy with it.

New ship classes, these are just the first, we've already found an old scout as well.

Def. new options for interaction. You can offer them cargo to see what they like, you can provoke them and attack them, you can let them go about their business....

Again, what is so wrong with having CG's to unlock some new weapons and the like. I don't mind it and in fact I don't even partake at times I just reap the rewards of those who do partake...though I usually do try to help. We were able to get the xenoscanner and missles with out an engineer grind, so that's a plus, I don't think things will be grindy for most of these new tools, they will just be need to have completed cg's and then will be available to all.

Let the story grow, it's not all going to be up front and center. This has only happened a couple of days ago in an area away from the bubble, it'll get to galnet eventually. As for finding this content in game, all you need to know is that there are strange goings on in the Pleiades, and you can get that info on galnet, then just head that direction and soon enough you'll find it...or they'll find you.

Again, we've been finding new things everyday and most if not the majority of those who have spent time with these new thargoid sites and interactions and what not have had a great time.

Everyone has a different opinion and different tastes on what they enjoy.
Personally, after playing many 'Battle Royale' style games; the whole concept of PUBG just bores the excrement out of me. *shrug*
Elite is a victim of it's own success in a way, it tries to do a bit of everything for everyone; leading to each individual expecting the game to focus solely on the aspects they enjoy.

But hey, just because you don't enjoy the game doesn't mean there are not 1000s of people who do.
Just be a gamer, play what you want and don't stress ;)

I was really disappointed in the Pippa Funnel games on PC because they never added lasers or antigravity harnesses for the ponies. The final straw for me was when, after moaning about it for years - taking extra special care to mention it every time there was something new that I could ignore - they still didn't give us a crap-shoveling simulation minigame.

I rage-quitted.

And don't even get me started on Euro Truck Simulator - no milk floats or dog-walking! What's the point in that!?

I'm kind of in the same boat, I downloaded PUBG to kill the time during the week leading to 2.4 as I wasn't interesting in spending all week in taking part in the CG/anti-Thargoid weapons grind.

And now I can't stop playing PUBG, so distracted by it that for the 2nd week in a row I've forgotten to get enough credits to unlock the damn Imperial Hammer. lol

It's even worse. They are indistrucable at the moment. It's like watching the vid on yt when they first came up. Where's the new gamplay element here? It's same ol... shooting. Once we got the weapons, it's fighting against stronger NPCs only. Nothing changed at all.

That might be true. I hope we discover really new things ...

No, of course not. But did you see any narrative so far? Anything? Me not. Don't talk about the ASCII driven text based story. That is exactly the killer here...

I think we got to find the story content. Hopefully we will stumble across the hooks shortly.

I think Thargoid storyline will go on until atleast Easter next year, unless they surprise us with a paid update for christmas

I'm still hoping we will start seeing colonies and stations going dark real soon, may be a huge attack on a core world soon.

Lava for example. Which would be wonderful to see our first shots of the thargoid mother ships having decimated stations and destroyed all ground base colonies.

The encounters are quite different, have you killed one? Several people have now, and they were long tactical encounters with multiple phases.

Please can you define what you consider to be 'narrative' and likewise provide an example of that from PUBG? My impression from you is, that you would only consider a cut scene to be narrative. Plenty of games have strong story and plot without them being interactive movies.

It is perfectly fine for you to like other games, but not all games have to be what YOU like. ;)
