Push to talk

Is there an official request thread?

Who uses push to mute?! I love the immersion value of the in game coms, but the push to mute baffles me. Any chance on getting this switched or anyone know of a way to switch it?

While I've not actually set it up for my use, I did envision a scenario where you might be chatting to your Wing (open microphone) and then you want to issue a command to Voice Attack. In this case you would mute your Elite Dangerous mic so your Wing wouldn't hear your command, while unmuting the Voice Attack mic, which by default would be muted unless told not to be. (you'd essentially bind the two programs to the same key).

Can push to mute be set to "toggle" rather than "hold"? If so then really you only need to push it once to then turn it into push to talk??
/untested...

I would really like to hear the Devs' reason for implementing push-to-mute. I've never seen another comms system like that. At the very least, have "hot mic" as a selectable toggle, and push-to-talk as the default normal comms mode.

Yes, it's in control options and this is what I have set up.

I'd rather have my mike on a toggle anyway so this works well for me.

ok, a toggle mute is a step I guess...

I know I'm like a lot of people, I have a house, a wife, kids and animals. I've always used push to talk because I like to control when I talk to people. Holding down the mute key just doesn't cut it. I just don't understand why this wasn't the path to start with every mmo/online/voip game is push to talk.

Yeah, this feature is completely backwards. Push to TALK devs, not push to mute. Open mics are bad often times because they are usually not set-up right, and every conceivable sound comes through, aside from ones choice.

Yeah, especially with the cheap mics sitting on the desk next to the speakers. That's always a joy, when you get to hear somebody's game sounds and lots of echo...

I agree OP, push to talk makes way more sense. Let me worry about my teamspeak setup, which has more options than a man could possibly want so no problem making it compatible.

Thanks for the link on the other thread...

Don't get why push to mute was put in over push to talk.... overlooked would be my guess.

I use Push-to-Mute. When I press my Push-to-talk for Voice Attack, I don't want my wing-mates to hear me giving commands to Voice Attack.

Push-to-mute is a sensible option when you rely on voice activation. That doesn't detract, of course, from the point that push-to-talk is also needed, and an option whether to use voice activation or not.

Also, a voice activation sensitivity slider. Currently the game seems to use Windows' internal settings, and my experience with these has been... messy. It tends to forget my calibration between sessions. Might be because I plug the headset into the front jacks and the onboard sound device recognizes that and switches the speakers (rear plug) off etc., and Windows freaks out about that?
