Pushing the bounderies: Elite/StarCitizen

That's because it is. The Cry Engine is primarily an FPS engine and has limited map sizes so the only way to make it look big is by using illusions. If you have ever mapped on FPS engines (e.g. the unreal engine) it's easier to understand the limitations. Basically it's a Crysis map with no terrain or gravity. Then has a fancy skybox wrapped round it. There is absolutely no way you could fit an actual sized planet in one, or even an average sized town :)

This is true, but CIG are working on a 64 but version of CryEngine. 64 but floating point numbers, it is already 64 bit code base.

When that happens they will have areas as big as ED does (Cobra was built with 64 bit from the start)

So, SC will get better, but not sure when. They say they now own the source code for CryEbgine (or right to modify it) not sure how long they will need to mod it.

ED on the other hand created their own engine, so know it inside out,

Star Citizen on the flip side takes a more "traditional" take on ships, where they more resemble atmospheric fighters (Yeah I know, theyre all rated for atmospheric flight too, but still thats not nearly the focus), but they also did a phenominal job of working it all in together and fitting out how it all works together.

While I both like ED and SC ships, the bigger issue is Chris Roberta confirmed last night (on 10 for the Chairman) that you would not actually land your ship. So those atmospheric wings are for naught.

You request for permission to land (from orbit) and then a sequence plays (I assume similar to ED's own hyperspace jump sequence) that you can look / walk around your ship, but it is fully automated.

This is a mistake. Landing in ED to me is one of its best features, seeing other players land near you is awesome. Just getting into the station is great fun. CIG need to rethink that one IMHO.

I think SC is going to back themselves into a corner. There's no way they can keep that level of detail/hand craftedness throughout their open universe if they want it as large as they're talking. So either they go more procedural and loose in graphical fidelity (which would get people complaining and comparing beta to release) or they just won't have that big of a place to play in. I know it's beta and all but everything of SC looks very boxed in. Whereas ED everything is open. But at least everything inside the box looks great. :D

I think they will have hands on landings for the Carrier in Sqn 42.
So it might just be for planetary landings it is a automated

That's a massive admission by him there. Did he rule it out completely or just say that planetary landings by players is on one of their famous to do lists?

The biggest problem I think CIG have with SC, is CR’s inability to say no.

Seems every idea thrown his way gets a thumbs up, “yeah, good idea we could incorporate that perhaps” seems to be all he can say in answer to some of the questions in 10 for the chairman.

No, would be great to hear from him now and again..;)

planets for sure seem fully automated, there was no "maybe in V2" type comments. He also stated your landing pad is your personal instance. So no other players with you. He did say you might see other "mission related or friends" ships in the distance, but, you could not walk to them.

Hopefully they will include carrier landing (as in post above) or ship-to-ship docking.

That is both a good and bad thing. Some User's suggestions are cool. But, their goal posts are moving faster than a Viper boosting out of a station! :D

Big immersion breaker there, but it does make integration of different game modes easier when you have different studios working on different, self-contained aspects of the game. A cut scene papers over the fact that you're now playing basically a new game instead of a continuation of the one you left.

Of course there's no guarantee that ED won't do something similar. We don't know yet (and won't for a long time, it seems) whether we actually hand-fly into an atmospheric entry and then down to the surface, or if it's a cut scene like the hyperdrive tunnel is now. I hope they can pull it off smoothly. If Evochron can do it, FD should be able to.
