Pushing the sidey

Has anybody tried really specialising on the Sidewinder (besides Isinona, of course).

Kitting it out with everything money can buy, upgraded armour, weapons and utilities.

It feels like it should make a really good and easily underestimated light bounty hunting, courier and even assassination ship. I've been using my limited play time to get comfortable with the Cobra, but I'd love to hear about the experiences of dedicated sidey-jockeys.

No specialist here, but I used the good sidey a generous bunch of hours.

I've tested the military hull with different loadouts. It's a very competent ship.
You can easily engage multiple AI ships, thanks to its good maneuverability and speed.
I've roamed many hours around LP 98-132, exploring every USS. I managed to kill a sidey and a Cobra in the same USS event with C2 Pulse Lasers.

One useful thing if you upgrade it with a better hull is that you can go silent against missiles and gimballed weapons.

The sidey has a pretty low energy output and, for example, it's hard to use two railguns + heat sink. One railgun + a missile rack is a nice combo.
One other great thing is the wide canopy which provides a great field of view (I missed that in a Viper).
Its small size and shape combined with its decent speed can make the sidey a bit difficult to target and hit.

I'm sure I'll be happy to stick with that very capable ship after the upcoming wipe :)

And the jump range is not too bad.

Real good job from Frontier. The starting ship is a delight to fly, even after many hours in more advanced ships.

For the moment, I have been specialising in the sidewinder and found it to be a very workable ship.

Even one with an upgraded hull and a couple of C2 cannons allowed me to take on NPC cobras and easily win. Not something I could do that well before I put those upgrades in. I'd either be forced to ram them at boost to take us both out, or I'd be down to about 10% hull after the battle. But a few upgrades make all the difference with it

I hope FD expand on the upgrades to allow better power units and engines to be fitted to it, but it does look like I'll be one player who'll have a pimped-out sidewinder on hand :D

Just wish the eagle was as good :(

I recently went back to basics... looking for a fresh bit of fun- where cost was no object (nowadays i got 8 digit balance).

Flew a sidewinder, and suprised/terrorized the distress beacon/LP system/Nav Beacons for a bit:

Railgun
Class 2 Cannon
K-Warrant scanner
Heat sink launcher
Mirrored surface armor

Had to fly with cargoscoop module off to not trip the breakers, but otherwise the ship had excellent heat and wpn bank performance.

And I was a terror in it (even if I do say so myself)! While the speed and shield strength are not up to the standards of the bigger ships, it handles like a dream, and is capable of some seriously nauseating maneuvers, once you put a pilot in it with some experience, and knows how to push its envelope. I even greyed-out to G-effects once or twice. Its agility made it effortless to pitch up/down the little amount to land railgun-cannon-railgun hits even mid loop (something a Cobra would lumber at due to its interia)

And one thing I noticed going back to the basic: its shield regen was FAST. whether damaged, or trying to reset, the shields restored faster than any other ship. although this may be due to its overall strength, its still a good bonus in drawn out combat.

I didnt stay in it long, though. I Had tons of fun, but in the end, its cargo capacity and low damage output (even as equipped) made it limited. -Example: Railgun and class2 cannon could not drop NPC Type 9 shields, or knock out its cargo hatch before it jumps away. Its just too beefy, and my raw DPS is just not up to the job in the time allotted.

But Sidewinders will always be fun, and effective in skilled hands. It is a good indicator that a ships performance has more to do with the pilots skill operating it than is due to the vehicle stats itself (just ask the viper pilot I killed in my sidey). and they are a BLAST when flown in a group of all sideys: then they are much like TIE fighters, buzzing and swarming to the dismay of anyone under their focus
