While pilots are outside their Scarabs and Scorpions, why not include a feature similar to the Mars rovers, where the vehicle could analyze air particles and take soil samples, while Commanders would scan biologicals? Maybe it could have a radiation alert tied in with neutron-star based systems, or falling meteorites.
