Putting my ship in storage and checking out until there is a game to be played.

I'm from the original generation, achieved Elite status on my BBC model B, and whilst I appreciate the efforts FD have made to be true to the original it feels like that's all they've done - created a clone of a 30 year old game without really adding anything new of any substance except some average graphics. Sure, I loved it at first, made Competent and made my first twenty million doing missions, bounty hunting and rare trades but then it just became a grind and soulless. The bugs have been an issue but worse than that fundamentally there just isn't an engaging game here to be played at the moment. Playing open is a chore because it's full of idiots that just want to grief or pirate you ("Hell I'm playing ED my way sucker!").

Big shame really, I'll check back in a few months but for now I'll go see what gameplay is being offered elsewhere. Nostalgia eh, it's not what it used be ....

Also from that generation,(well more Frontier .1984 elite, i just watched my brother playing) .

Sounds like you've played a ton, i feel like i am halfway to where you are now, just waiting for Wings to arrive, then its going to be more a social thing. Anyhow, probably best to step away from the keyboard its a big world out there,
see you soon Commander.

A week after release, haven't played since.
This game was never a fully finished product as stated by FD, and as such, has earned a bad reputation from reviews.
With a put off buyers market, money must be dwindling , can't see much getting done quickly here folks.
Lets be realistic, the motivation to keep working on this is poor, as evident by the ridiculous quality control.
Go free to play, hand the code over to the community and let us fix this dung heap.

judging by the quality, speed and focus that developers are taking, come back in two years.

Sold my Python, bought a decked out Asp, and banked the remaining 200 million. The Asp is parked in landing bay 2 while I play Galaga in the space lounge. Commanders need time off too, and that is what I will be doing until something comes along.

It's always sad having to leave a game because it did not match your expectations. I'm still loving the game, I think I will be playing for a while. Good luck to you, hope you come back to a better game! :)

I started playing the original Elite on my Commodore 128 back in 1986 and made it up to a Deadly Pilot Rating before I joined the Army a few years later. Even with that I was always amazed at such an immersive game being created with such a small resource footprint. Now fast forward 27 years later and Elite Dangerous has definitely filled the shoes of its great grandfather "Elite". However, IMO the multi-player for Elite Dangerous is still deep in the Development phase of the Software Product Life Cycle. Despite this, I continue playing, working on my Pilots rating while increasing my riches.

I am curious, is there any specific content or functionality you'd like to see added to Elite Dangerous that you would feel would make the game better?

Thats a really good question and I've read posts here which explain what's missing much more eloquently than I'm able to. I have some sympathy for FD because they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they deviated too much from the original concept the traditionalists would complain that it isn't Elite any more. If they stick to the framework of the original like they have then people will continue to get bored and walk away from it. It needs depth and more solid objectives beyond just achieving a rank, amassing wealth or exploring a system. It sort of feels like GTA without the main story or side missions. Yeah there's the bulletin board jobs but they're dull. Do I really want to go and deliver something for 900 CR when I have 20M CR in the bank? They're unbalanced.

I am not bored yet but I think the big problem is indeed some sort of missing storyline or campaign. I don't know why they didn't implement one, since First Encounter had one (the hand-coded Thargoid missions and the story that came with them). I think the key would be to make it purely optional, like it was in First Encounters. Want to take part? Great. Don't want to? Also great. If they had made it optional and not time sensitve, so that you could come back later and take breaks in between doing other stuff, in my opinion that would have been the right move.

Wing Commander Privateer (that came out about the same time as Frontier Elite 2 did) had a storyline that you could pick up at any time if you wanted to. So did Freelancer.

I think if Elite D came with three campaigns, one for every major faction, purely optional, that you could do in your own pace with the ability to take breaks in between it would be much better.

The purists would be happy, since it's optional and everybody else would also be happy. Give out some meaningful rewards besides credits as incentive, like special naval ship skins, naval rank decals or a faction specific ship as final reward at the end and that's it.

I think it would have taken a lot of critisism away from the game. Hell, as far as I am concerned they wouldn't even need cutscenes. Just flavorful bulletin board text and the according news items.

It was the Space Combat/Trade Simulation ideas and the idea of an open galaxy I could use as a sandbox, which drew me to the original Elite. I loved the idea of having no rails. However, with that being said, this is the 21st century and a modern game/simulation should have a robust multi-payer mode along with in-depth sub-plots for all major factions(Alliance, Federation and Empire). (not everyone can be the hero, but we all have our parts to play in this galaxy.)

For Single/Multi-Player improvements I would like to see: (listed in order of importance)
1. Take steps to curtail any and all Cheats, Hacks or Bot usage.
2. NPC AI Improvements.
3. Group missions for major faction sub-plot story lines (including Alliance rank).
4. Player to Player in station trading (goods and/or money)
5. Player to Player in space money exchange. (cargo is jettisoned in space for pickup)
6. Flying in wings or squadrons with Players or NPCs.
7. multi-player interdiction (including NPCs).
8. Improved Single Player to Player or Player to NPC Voice Communications.
9. Incorporate Player to Player group Voice Communications. (multi-channel [Friend/Foe] communications.)

IMO, Elite Dangerous has far surpassed the original Elite, and with FD's continued development, I expect Elite Dangerous will evolve into a really special multi-player game.
