PVE Simple Viper MKIV vs Vulture for Basic Combat Question

So I had posted a thread earlier this week about finding good ships for PVE that allow me to just shoot up ships for mats in either CNB's or in USS "weapon fire". I've found that without using collector limpets, that the easiest ships I tried were the Vulture and the Viper MKIV to manually collect materials.

My questions is, I found my Pre 3.0 engineered Vulture with a corrosive overcharged MC and Efficient Beam isn't taking ships down that great. Also I hate having one weapon firing on one side and another from the other. With the new engineering, are 2 beams now possible for heat/power management? Or would 2 pulse still be the answer?

I like the Viper MKIV's jump range, and would love to use this ship, but I don't want to go through the process of engineering it from scratch (as I have too many other ships I need to convert from Pre 3.0 over) unless people have found this ship to be a lot better than the Vulture for my situation?

If the Viper is preferable which is better for this ship? 2x Med MC and 2x small Beams, or is 4x pulse better at taking things down? (I don't want to use any of the other weapons as I use a mouse and these are just easier to do).

Basically if the Viper MKIV is going to be faster at taking down simple ships in USS's over the Vulture, I'll engineer one up, if not, then I'd rather try and use my already pre 3.0 G5 engineered Vulture I have laying around...

You could try dual gimballed efficient beams on the Vulture and perhaps slap a small overcharge on the power plant - it all depends on the remainder of your setup - shileds, boosters, sensors, scanners all take a lot of power.
And of course whether you have Broo Tarquin unlocked.

Why not something like this: Rail Viper

I built one, but I think OP is starting from scratch, so there is no way he'll be able to get 4 rails on it.

P.S., OP, I don't get your point about the mouse? Mouse+KB is reportedly the input meta.

A Vulture with dual beams was possible under the old system, mine still is pre-3.0 engineered and tears through anything I put in front of it. Sometimes I use dual fragcannons on it and I knock out shields and 50% of the hull with a single magazine.

A Vulture would easily kill things faster than a VIV because of how armour penetration works. For instance a C2 pulse laser has an armour piercing of 35 but would only do 50% of its listed damage to the hull of an FDL, which has an armour rating of 70.

This matters when gathering materials because the larger ships regularly drop G4 and G5 mats, but the VIV would only be doing roughly half it’s listed damage unless you’re using railguns, cannons or PAs because the lowest armour rating of the larger ships is 60. C1 lasers have 20 AP (beams have 18) and C2 multicannons have an AP of 37 vs a Vulture’s C3 beam(s) with 50 AP.

The Vulture can also tank much more damage, is faster and more maneuverable than the VIV.

It doesn’t look as nice, sound as good, jump a comparable distance or have the outfitting flexibility of the VIV though.

Even with engineered multis on a Viper IV, it can be tedious to take down the larger trade vessels sometimes, depending on their rank.

Ooh, but you could find a "Massacre Faction X Traders" mission, OP! Those mission always spawn harmless and mostly harmless targets. And you'd be terrorizing a system, to boot, which in my book is pretty awesome.

Thanks everyone.

I just haven't been a fan of railguns at all, I have a couple G5 Pre 3.0 engineered ones in storage, but wasn't a fan when I had tried them out in the past. I'm pretty bad shooting wise, so trying to stick to gimballed weapons over fixed.

Yep I have every engineer unlocked and maxed out (except Qwent which I only have to G4). And with the new 3.0, I should be able to increase the power a lot better from my current power plant. I might have to try the efficient beams then, I have a few of those G5 efficient in storage as well I can test out and see how they work. I'm just more used to beams/MC combo, so wasn't sure how just 2 beams would be taking down ships with the Vulture.

Think I'll try that out since I don't have to do much of any engineering that way. I can take the hit off the FSD range for more power with the Vulture over the Viper MKIV, considering I don't see myself really flying far just looking for simple CNB or "Weapon Fire" USS. Plus the Vulture is collecting dust now so I might as well try and put it to use then...

My vulture has been collecting dust for some time, but I still polish it up and take it for a spin every once in a while. Mostly in Solo.

Yeah I'm trying to find uses for some of my ships that were pre 3.0 engineered and would like to put some of them to good use. I only play in Mobius anyways so that's kind of like Solo. For combat ships, I have a Vulture and FDL without any real use as I've been using my Corvette for pretty much all combat and that's about 1/2 way 3.0 updated. But running out of some materials for that ship and all the chain of ships behind it so wanted something quick, fast and easy to get those combat materials without having to try and scoop in CZ's and such with my vette...

It was a racy joke, OP ;)

I've really been enjoying the weapon setup I've been screwing with in my Viper IV, recently. If you'd like, I can take a video of some RES action.
