My PvP is primarily defensive and opportunistic.

As such, I have long found wide angle to be ideal. It allows me to gather details on a target, without being so obvious that I am in fact scanning them, which I find helpful for shock tactics.

Honestly I always get 'A' Rated for the range and G5 lightweight them. Vanilla sensors weigh a hell of a lot.

I just feel safer as many Cmdr's default to the 'D' rated and I fight from distance initially.

'A' rated are good for checking out Cmdr's in Asteroid belts and basically preparing an ambush / alpha strike.

D rated on most things. A rated on ships with large power and mass surplus that I use PAs on.

I don't care if my sensors break on my vette or vulture, as none of my weapons need any sort of target lock to work fine (though the loss of the missile warning/tracking is occasionally problematic), but my krait is different.

Your own sensor icon will flash/flicker when you conduct a basic scan of someone, so unless you are beyond resolve range, this is meaningless.

RIP. Didn't know that. Still, you can't dispute the fact that I don't have to point directly a contact in SC, to find out if he has an interdictor. That is very handy for defensive flying.

Long range, D rated on my mass/power constrained ships(Courier/Vulture) and A rated on the rest.
I feel blind with anything else now.

For me it is:
1) If I use lock-ons or gimbals for some reason, sensors are A rated. Otherwise, D grade all the way.
2) If sensors have less than 6.5 km detection range, I mod them LR3. Otherwise, they become LW3 or unmodded for hull tanks (with an exeption of conda, lightweight all the way).

D rated sensors is all your need in PVP

If you are fighting at ranges over 4k and reply on LR weapons to win, you are a noob :)

I rock D sensors with long range engineering on all my pvp ships.

There are a lot of players that use fast ships to run away to recharge their shields. Long range allows me to stay locked onto them when they do this.
Long range is DEFINITELY the way to go.

Long range sensors are super useful for ambushes and recon as well. Very nice to see prey 10+ km out from them.

I recently switched to D-rated + G5 long range. And I noticed in the last couple of ganks, the gankers have TLB, I'm using frags with gimbals but I cant reacquire a lock with "H" - get target hot key. Does that have something to do with my sensors? I never had a problem with this before.

Do they also have dazzle?

I'm not familiar with dazzle. How would I know? Unable to reacquire target lock?? If that's the case, these guys have the perfect operation: 4v1, FSD reset, TLB, Dazzle, Cascade torps. The last time I jumped as soon as I saw it was the same crew. No point in engaging.

Dazzle is probably the culprit. Lowers target ‘sensor acuity’ which I believe means range? In any case it punishes D-rated sensors very badly.

I personally use D rated Lightweight sensors on my prismatic vulture build (power issues), but on most combat ships, I use A rated Grade 5 Long Range. 11.5kms is awesome!

I can see them on my radar, but can't get a lock after TLB. Is that explained by dazzle?

Dazzle is the effect that looks like a pulse blip or lightning bolt in the effects indicator. It reduces effective sensor range, which means target cycling won't work, only target under reticle (as anyone shooting you recently is partially resolved), unless they are extremely close.

Ships with multiple PAs will often take TLB, dispersal, and dazzle.

This explains what I was experiencing. I couldn't lock on them unless directly in front of me. Thanks for helping me understand these tactics. With 4 of them buzzing around like flies, much easier to high wake out.
