Pvp Tournaments

Anyone know whether there will be official pvp tournaments, perhaps held in anarchy systems with cash prizes and such? If not I submit that it would be great if Frontier created events such as this in the ED world, to make it more alive and active. What's your point of view? I would love to hear official news on the topic and similar ideas.

If they make it so commanders can send each other money we can do the rest ourselves. We've already had the buckyball run's "illegal" ship racing showing up in the GalNet feed. I'd like to dock one day, pick up the spacenewspaper and read about an "illegal" (player managed) combat tournament being held in some pirate system. The thought of a cash prize on top of that would encourage me to visit for more than the novelty alone.

The big problem with holding a pvp tournament - in my opinion - is that the player base is so spread out. If you held a tournament somewhere in the galaxy it would mean a heck of a journey for many players (granted, I imagine that a lot of pvpers will roam around in the more populated areas). I mooted the idea of adding combat simulators to the docking stations; some liked it, some didn't. I'd still argue that it makes pvp tournaments more viable as it circumnavigates having to travel to a specific location. In fact, thinking about it further, combat simulators could be used for activities other than pvp tournaments - for example, players could use them to test out a new weapon loadout whilst still docked.

Some will say that combat simulators break immersion, etc... I'd say "What are you currently playing?"

Someone was talking about organizing a PvP tournament towards the end of beta, but i don't think anything came of it.

I think it would be better if it was done withing the confines of the game, travel to the system and all. After all, people have to travel to sporting tournaments on this planet, so why not a few hundred light years for a ship fight?

You could be bothered to say you wouldn't want it; at least have the decency to explain why.

Mainly because it's not what I wanted from the game and what I expected the game to be from the developer talks and such in the past. I didn't realize they'd be 'nerfing' ships based on PVP balance nor putting that much attention into PVP itself. Wings will just make this worse if they don't add cooperative goals alongside the release, we'll just have groups of people taking out traders. I had hoped this was a game created around the single player with multiplayer interactions (not 'just' PVP) and when I fought, traded, and got my way to a bigger, better ship it would be a force to be reckoned with, not changed so a smaller ship was more 'balanced' with it.

I was hoping it was a game based around 'my story' but it's not. These forums (in beta) went from pie in the sky dreams of taking down federation ships together to "Nerf shield cells" and "Python is OP, IWIN buttons" and "combat loggin should stop" and posts filled with "carebear" and "it's Elite DANGEROUS OMG u gaiz".

Creating a subset in the game completely focused on this "PVP balance" will intentionally harm my game. It already has with the Shield Cells and Python nerf because "they were too good" ... I don't associate risk or 'danger' with "fun". My fun is just cruising around the galaxy in an awesome ship. Getting better ships to do this with.

Focusing on PVP takes away from what I believe they should be focusing on: PVE content. This extremely vocal PVP crowd is going to change the game I expected it to be.

It's my fault for hoping it was something based on what the developers said and I guess "things change". That's fine, I can find something else. For now I still enjoy the game but I find it tiresome to see the same arguments and insults flung here that I have seen on various other PVP-focused games in the past. I thought this was something different.

I've been very vocal about where I want this game to go and what I hope it to become. A PVP-based Arena shooter with player controlled stations is not one of them.

Awww, i came here thinking someone was organizing one.

Listen PvPers, why don't you do this? Organize one yourself. You lot spend so much time complaining about people combat disconnecting, being able to switch modes, being able to make money in other modes safely... why not instead spend some of that energy getting together and organizing PvP with others who want to do it?

Yes, it won't be as easy as blasting that poor T6 with a cargo full of Palladium and no shields, but you will get what you claim you want. Meaningful PvP with people who will give you a challenge.

Here is my suggestion:

1) Choose a fairly central anarchy system, but one with nearby systems selling a good range of upgrades and ships. Also importantly a station in the system that acts as the central location for people (losers) to respawn at, ideally not far from the chosen location for the fights.
2) Organize a day for the event.
3) Get volunteers to act as moderators - hell, maybe even some PvEers to help out so nobody has to miss out on the fun (Moderators are naturally off limits). Get 3 sets from different timezones and have the event reoccur 3 times on that day. Some might have to act as "security" to get rid of any curious NPCs.
4) Choose a suitable location for the battle in the system, one that everyone can easily find but not swarming with NPCs. A low resource asteroid belt could be an option.
5) Have a series of events including a knockout tourney and at the end a final free for all. There could also be special events like a sidewinder challenge.

The only thing holding this back from being epic is the 32 players per instance limit. But its something that could work for fun.

My suggestion to pvpers would be to hold your own tournament. Pick an area and instance and hold your own tournament--just be sure that innocent bystanders or passersby don't get drawn unwillingly into your fun and games. I think we can all live together: the pewpew brigade, the space truckers, the explorers and miners, and wandering vagabonds like me. Like any family though, we're all going to have to give a little to get a little. So, as far as I'm concerned, if you want to have your tournament, have your tournament and have fun.

Ive often why the vocal PvP crowd haven't done this, anyone would think they don't like fair fights.

Fair fights are something to be avoided whenever possible.

Fighting is a means to an end, not the end in and of itself. Willingly engaging in combat without stacking the odds in my favor to the greatest extent possible is not going to help me achieve my goals.

Yep. This game is going to be like every other game in the last 10 years. It will be a pity because they will still complain that someone else does x feature better and then they will move on. There is a reason COD release a new version every year or 2.

Could be difficult to organise a PvP tournament for fellows such as yourself, which is the point of the thread.

The type 6 or 7 referee. Get it going with enough people then bug the devs for a referee skin :p

Like the general community in Freelancer, best to ban shield cells alltogether. You could even say at 5% hull or something simmilar the fight is lost to midigate financial
penalties.

A hardcap on rebuy cost perhaps?

In real life combat situations I agree, this however is a game played on a computer. Try to remember that salient point.

Oh, you could also ask everyone who wants to take part in the event bring some high value good with a certain sell value. 1t per competition they want to enter. Winner takes all!

The ref can hold all cargo until the competition is over, so winners don't suffer performance degredation due to holding cargo. So yeah, ref should be in a cargo ship... and trustworthy :D
