Pyrrhic Victory.

I thought i'd try flying an Eagle with actual weapons for once, as i usually fly the Peterson hauler. And since i've only ever fitted point-defence and chaff in the past i was excited to get out there. I "splashed out" on a Burst laser and torpedo rack, and spent 15000 credits on ammo. Long story short i had my first ever dog-fight with a mostly harmless, NPC sidewinder, and i took a little damage before blowing him up with my torpedo. It was AWESOME! But the hangover of my violence binge was soon to come, when i landed i suddenly realised i had to pay another 15k for re-arming, i thought i must have bought like 90 of those things for that price! 15000 credits for one torp, i only got 800 credits for my kill :( Would have been cheaper to die lol, i have refitted with multi-cannon instead as i can't afford to play with the big-boys it seems. Are there cheaper torpedos/missiles out there or is that the starter price? because i think i bought the cheapest torp rack there.

foreverowned, lol. Nice username. :D

Short answer = Yes

Long answer is you bought the wrong thing. Look for missles, you can buy dumb non trackning missle pods for around 20 - 30k or Heat seeking, lock on fire and forget type ones for around 50-60k

I think they each come with 6 missles and you can rearm them a few times over for a heck of a lot less than the price you paid for your torpedo.

Torpedos and missles can be either our run or countered with turret defence and ECM units

Ah i see thank you, i think i got carried away in my excitement, i'll keep an eye out for those other ones.

If you are just starting out just fit some gimballed lasers for killing NPC's and avoid any ammo related weps.
2 gimballed lasers will be fine, get 3 if your have the power. Once you get some practice in you can start experimenting with weps.
Avoid using missiles and torps they are expensive to use to begin with, even multi cannons can have a hefty rearm bill.

As you get better and understand how killing NPC's works you can experiment with more wep types.
As you get into bigger ships and start earning more missiles start to become more affordable.
I never use them myself, as they suck too many credits, but if you are generally just hauling and usually avoid combat, they can be really useful for the "oh crap" moments, where you need to kill the enemy fast to save your haul and make it to station, you don't mind paying out then to save a million cred haul.

I wouldn't bother with gimbaled lasers on an eagle, that ship is nimble enough to aim with fixies and they're close together so you don't have Crosseyed Cobra Syndrome. I have the two loaner pulse lasers on the bottom (swap one) and a gimballed multicannon on top. The lasers make quick work of shields, and the cannon is useful once you go into a turning match or run low on WEP power. Add one of the good class C power distributors and an improved power plant to have enough juice when it's deployed, maybe a better shield generator and life support and you can rack up significantly more bounties than you'll pay for ammo with a ship that has under 5K insurance value.
