Ship Builds & Load Outs Python miner

I have 2 mining lasers in the medium hardpoints, the rest are large gimballed pulses. This and only 2x3A collector controllers allows me to use the 6A PP with power to spare. I also use the 4B refinery, as there are only 9 different materials to be found in pristine metallic rings. 4 collectors are enough for me, especially if you position your ship right above the cloud of chunks after you've depleted the 'roid.

Good one, cheers for this! I do prefer the 6A reactor to the 7A because of weight but can't see myself parting with my beloved beams :)

Two mining lasers - big difference?

Two mining lasers - big difference?

Takes half the time to deplete a rock, with only one mining laser but 6 collectors they are probably idling a lot. I like to get the rock depleted as fast as I can, then point the ship at the next one I'm going to prospect, while at the same time manoeuvering right above the cloud of chunks, so that the collectors have only short trips.

Ah. Now I feel I cheated myself out of finding out with good ol' experimentation :D

No, really, thanks!

Here is my Mining Python, the AGS Henry Draper.

I thought about setting up 3 large pulse turrets and put the mining lasers in the medium slots but that's too much for the 7C power plant. And no, I don't intend to upgrade to a 6A or even 7B or A.

Comments welcome :D

Really it depends what you're mining for. The 3 P's and gold, anything you can get and then back to sell it all off ASAP or a specific item for a CG.

If you just want to rip everything as fast as possible then 2 x 2 D lasers and lots of collectors, more specific and you'll find you're going through collectors and having to do return munition trips. Also personal preference. Probably my reactions aren't what they were but I can barely keep up with micro managing the refinery deciding it's not going to process stuff even though there are bins empty. What the hell it's got against gold I've not idea but it always seems to reject that and osmium. Not handy in the current CG. 2 empty bins and half a ton Gold but oh no it doesn't want to put that through without me OKing it first, grumble, grumble.

1 x 2D mining laser strips a rock at around the same speed as 4 collectors pick stuff up with a little time left over to start looking for the next target.

Largely there is no right or wrong way just what suits you best, have a play and see what fits for you.

I built a mining python for the CG, I wasn't impressed with the handling of the ship at all, had all B rated modules and was very sluggish and slow, almost got wiped out by a wing of 4 Eagles that were pirating the rings I was in. Maybe i'm just spoiled by the responsiveness and quickness of the Clipper I usually use. Other than that it seems to be a nice platform to mine from since it can land at outposts, maybe if i run into some extra credits I'll A rate one and try it out.

With a 7A PD you can fire 3 miner lasers for around 15 seconds until weapon cap is empty, and then it can still fire two constantly.
8 Collectors will happily keep up with the chunks.

4A shield and a couple of D shield boosters give me enough time to jump away from anything that looks mean, if my shields go down during my Brave Sir Robin maneuver then I flick on silent running and pop a heat sink.
3G Bursts let me swat anything that looks annoying. I could use turrets instead.... but I've found turrets to be far less effective.

My logic behind this build is that speed is the way to make profit, not cargo capacity.
Defense and offense are distant secondary concerns, as far as I'm concerned if you're running into hostiles often as a miner you're doing something very very wrong.
And I still have a 15ly fully laden jump range
