Ships Python or T9 Heavy?

Hey there CMDR,

I'm currently in a maxed out T7 making about 4 mil an hour. I'm ready for the trade grind, but which ship should I aim for? I know the Python can be an excellent trading vessel, but the T9 is also known as ''The Profit King''.

I do like to bounty hunt in my vulture every now and then, but I'm not much of a fan of the vulture. So is it worth to sacrifice the 500+ cargo capacity of the T9 for the more versatile Python?

Thanks

- Vurosia

Max trade Python is 284 with no shields. So only a marginal step up from the Lakon7 with the advantage of medium pad landing.
The Python is a capable BHer, but you would need to throw at least 100M cr all in to make it a sturdy combat ship and cargo would drop to 252 or lower.

I think if you have the money and can afford the 10% sell-back penalty, the Lakon 9 is worth trying just to join the "I flew one" club. Jump range is difficult to get above 13LY, so all these "I made a trillion creds a minute" stories need to be weighed up against your current trade route. It turns like an iceberg stuck in a jar of molasses in a pit of quicksand. You will not believe how slow it is, practically impossible to get a speeding ticket!

Also with the improved NPC AI, I would advise sticking at least a 4A shield and a couple of shield boosters on a trade L9. Losing 500t of Gold to a psycho Computer Pirate is not going to thrill you.

I worked my way up to a T9 and dont regret it, I enjoy flying the behemoth.
It really depends on what you want to do more, BH or trading.
For me, getting and keeping the T9 was the way to go. In no time I earned enough to get an FDL and soon enough A-spec the FDL. Im now looking at getting an Orca for the heck of it :p

If you think you will be happy trade grinding to get a diff ship quicker I would suggest the T9 to start with.

I'm lucky to find a 3 jump route for about... 2300 to 2500 credits per tone round trip.. it does flactuate a lot.

And I just like to lumber around in something that feels truely heavy.

But good luck in your descision.

Buy a T9 - you'll make money quickly and then you can afford the Python as an additional ship, grinding the T9 when you need spares. Also, the T-series have fairly low maintenance costs so should be more economical until the Integrity issues are resolved.

If you don't want an all-rounder and happy to use a second ship for 'fun things' then T9 for sure.
Even on mediocre 1/2 stop routes you make money pretty fast.
It is slow and heavy but sort of stately and surprisingly easy to dock.

Make sure you have at least 110 mil in assets before going t the T9. Anything short of the A rated fsd is completely worthless and it costs a lot to fill up that cargo bay. The most terrifying time I've had in this game was when I cut it too close on assets when I bought it. Had enough to outfit it and fill up the hold but not enough for insurance. Dark thoughts danced around in my head knowing that if something went wrong I would be back in a sidewinder.

Luckily all went well and with my 8.4M credits per hour route I only had to fly that lumbering hulk for a few days before my anny. I make even more now since I configured my anny to do the rout in one jump even with 70 less cargo space.
