Newcomer / Intro Python or Type-9?

I just got this game last week and have fallen in love. I’m currently in a Type-6 and am looking to upgrade with something with more cargo space, and I’m stuck between choosing between these two. From what I’ve read, the Python is faster and easier to maneuver and fight in, but the Type-9 completely overtakes it in sheer cargo space, so I figure it should pay for itself quickly. I’m just wondering whether it’s worth saving up the extra 20 million. Thoughts from veteran players?

Python.

It's my 3rd favourite ship, after the Asp Explorer and Krait MkII. Its versatility makes it such a great ship I would definitely recommend going for that first, you can chop and change to fit it out for mining or mission running as required.

The T9 is definitely a better trading ship, but there's 3 things to remember:

1. You will need a lot more credits to kit it out and fill the cargo.
2. You can't land at Outposts.
3. It doesn't turn, not even in SuperCruise :D

Python, but it costs a LOT more than the listed price. It's modules, especially combat related ones will make your eyes bleed.

Krait mk.II

You can't look at the stock hull cost as neither of these two is usable stock. A decently equipped Python will cost you 200 million. Anything less and it's a death trap that can't jump, fly, or run. T9 about 150 million.
Both ships are as un-fun to fly as it gets, but at least in case of T9 it's understandable because it can haul four times as much cargo.

And don't forget T7. More cargo than Python, more agile, better armour,... The only downside is that it can't land on outpost, like T9 (requires large landing pad)

Krait is much more fun to fly, has better jump range, is faster than all the others and costs half. It hauls the least amount of cargo, though. So it really boils down to what you want to do.
Mission, long range hauls or passengers - Krait
Pure bulk trading and stacking of delivery missions - T9

Or even better. Go here: https://coriolis.edcd.io/
and build one of each ship the way you plan to use them and compare the cargo, jump ranges, speeds and prices, then decide.

My first answer to the question "should I get a python or a type 9" is "yes".

The python is by far the more versatile of the two, though. There are few things you can't do in a python, even if it isn't the best ship at many things (apart from hauling cargo to outposts, where it's the undisputed king)

Krait or Python.
T-9 is fun to fly, but it will probably get you killed. A lot.

I like the Python, but not for combat.

Krait is an excellent general purpose ship.

What!? You have played the game for a week and you still haven't bought the Python? What is wrong with you?
You should have been flying an A-rated Cutter by now.

I'd say both have their place.

Python is far more useful early on, just because of its flexibility. It'll do anything you want to do, and do it fairly well. Combat, trade, mining, exploration, whatever. Cheap compared to the T9 as well.

The T9 is for when you have to carry large amounts of cargo in one go, or would like to mine for extended periods. I'd generally advise against fighting with it, unless you're rich and/or bored. You can explore with it, too, assuming you modify it enough.

Depends if you want a medium or large ship.

The Python versatile. The T-9 is a bulk freighter and handles like one.

Stepping out of the T-6, I'd actually be choosing between the Krait MkII or the Type-7 if I was tossing up medium vs large. Both are more affordable, allow similar game play, and are more forgiving than the other two.

Python. From the standpoint of escaping interdictions ALONE. Its a much more agile ship and you’ll be glad for that extra agility. I reached multi billionaire status using a Python for cargo delivery missions.

The T9 is great at hauling high tonnages and has one of the best fields of view in the game you can do other things with it but it’s bulk and lack of handling can cause problems. I have one and am using it for bulk hauling in the Community Goal that is currently happening as part of this months Interstellar Initiative.

The Python can haul more than any other ship in the medium category and is pretty much a true multi role ship but it is not without issues, it can be deceptively sluggish unless fitted with expensive modules and engineering to the extent it was rated one of the fastest ways to get back in a free Sidewinder. I have had one for a while and it is currently set up as a Core mining ship it isn’t a ship I have always felt comfortable with.

Alternatively there is the T7 a large pad ship only really suitable for hauling its best feature is that it handles superbly in super cruise and is almost immune to interdiction by NPCs, it has a good field of view but isn’t really good at any other roles however it is fairly cheap and a fair earner.

The Kraits are a lot like the Python except they carry less however they seem much less sluggish. The mkII can be fitted with a fighter which can be useful but not recommended if you are trying to fast track your combat ranking. The Phantom can be made to run very cold which can have numerous advantages.

Having made my way up through the ships before today’s relative lack of financial concerns I find the jump from a T6 to anything other than the T7 a dangerously big step, my route was Cobra III to Asp Explorer.

Sorry that I have a life outside of gaming.

He was making a joke. It used to take time and effort to get stuff in ED, but FD made it incredibly easy to get credits with the mining update, and where it once used to take months of play before people would normally get the big ships, now its possible to people to earn a billion within a few days.

I brought the T7 before I brought the Python. I flew it for about a 2 days, and then sold it and brought a Python instead. Don't regret it for a second :D

It took me a year to get a Python, and I could not even afford to A-rate her. That took me another few months. I started out using her as a D-rated freighter. The price of an A-rated Python powerplant made my eyes water back then. When I finally put that A-rated powerplant in, I felt I had really accomplished something. It felt special.
Those were the days...

The Python is the core ship in my fleet. It excels at nothing, but can do everything reasonably well, and it can dock everywhere.
Being able to go everywhere, while having a very decent internal capacity, is what makes it such a sought after ship. It is the king/queen of the medium pad.
When I want to do missions, or a bit of ranking, I always pick my Python.

I would go for the Python, there is this:

You will do a lot of running until you can start adding weapons and so forth

My Python has less cargo space than Abysinth's, but I am quite happy with it's performance and it is still my go-to ship. I find it perfect for the short transport runs and it doesn't have any problems dispatching NPCs in PVE world. It is all down to personal preference.
