Python vs FDL in pve

Specifically in resource extraction sites (occasional pvp if I try to), is there a large difference between the two? I currently run fully upgraded Python and the insurance costs 6 million. The problem is that I die in the most stupid ways possible e.g crashing into station, friendly fire on station, killed by loitering due to being stuck, crashing into asteroid. I am thinking of switching to a Fer-De-Lance where insurance is half as much. It's faster and the manuverability does not depend on pips to engines as much. The power plant/distributor is much smaller. Is it worth it?

Vulture, if you are worried about insurance. Vulture kills slower than either python or FDL, but it doesn't matter - it is spawn limited in RES anyways, and has <1 mil insurance fully kitted.

I lov my fdl, great ship for pve and pvp. Look for some good load outs in the ships thread. Power is fine if you are careful.

Python is the logical choice for PvE. It has that much more firepower and you can use the big weapons all the time.
I recommend 3x gimballed C3 pulse lasers and 2x gimballed C2 beam lasers for RES hunting.

Roll a FDL with c3+2xc2 fixed pulse, and 2xc2 gimballed pulse. Excellent capacitor efficiency, good fitting, no ammo, good spike damage(70dps for 8seconds), decent against hull and shields.
Uncomplicated.
Versatile.

Success.

All i can say is the Python is the King of PvE :D , it does everything very well unless your large trading, power output is insane its firepower matched with its weapon placement is by far the best in the game in PvE you can choose whatever internal and weapon loadout you like, i prefer 3xlarge pulse and 2xMed cannons, no matter whats infront of you its dead fast, the FDL is just as good in combat in PvE (FDL is better in PvP)but thats all it does well and the placement of weapons on the FDL makes it harder to get all weapons on target at one time than it should for a combat ship.

The FDL will not save you from dying "... in the most stupid ways." As you said the insurance is lower.
The difference between them in combat: both are designed for different combat styles. As FalconFly pointed out, the Python is designed to survive heavy combat conditions with incredible defence abilities (shield, booster, SCB´s, armor). For the offence it provides the ability to use the full range of the available weaponary in any combination you want. The FDL relies more on speed than on pimped up shields/ armor and the precise usage of it´s specialized class 4 hardpoint. You can always outrun ships that can outgun the FDL and you can outgun every ship that can outrun the FDL.
In my experience the python is easier to use in most situations and it´s more useful through it multipurpose role but the FDL excels in combat because it can always dictate the combat conditions caused by it´s speed. The firepower is second to that.

FDL is great for combat. If you want to do other things, like travel without hassle and maybe do trading when you're bored, you might want the Python. Both ships demand class A thrusters and rip and tear regardless. If you're thinking about money upgrades first, do the FDL first since you only need ~83m (lets say ~95 for insurance sake) for full upgrades sans the hull upgrades. You need about ~100m for a comfortable C grade python with ample insurance money.

Against AI, at res sites, the Python is best.

The FDL is faster, so can get to targets quicker, and its huge weapon can bust up the powerplants of anacondas if you put a cannon on it, but you have finite ammo.

5 fixed pulse lasers is what I use on the python. I fly with 4 pips to weapons, it wreaks everything. I don't even bother to target powerplants with it.

The python is also more maneuverable than the FDL. It pitches better, and hasn't got the same "drift".

You also have the power to use A sensors, which helps at res sites, and as many shield booster/cells as you would like.

I consider the FDL to be more maneuverable. It has better thruster performance, similar inertia, and no great deficiency in any rotational axis vs. the Python, except in rolling, which the Python is exceptionally good at.

A sensors do help at the RES, and the Python certainly has more surplus power.

I haven't timed their pitch differences, but I was having problems hitting ships with all fixed weapons in the FDL.
I don't have any problems keeping targets in my fixed weapons on the pythons, both with top rated thrusters obviously.

I loath the speed of the python however. I think its probably better for PVP once the fighting is going. Being slower is useless for PVP in my opinion though, you will never catch a quicker opponent to finish them off, and you can never escape if you get into trouble. FDL mass locks a Python just to make it even worse.

I rarely tracking targets with my FDL's fixed weapons, even fast or nimble ships. It's thruster performance is quite good for it's size and the whole ship can be moved rather quickly to compensate for any deficiencies in rotational performance.

Running an all fixed loadout is tricky though, because the overall spread of the medium hardpoints is quite wide. I ran purely fixed weapons on my Viper, but I normally run 2-4 gimbals/turrets on my FDL. Still, my best weapon is almost always a fixed large laser in the huge hardpoint.

for pve: pick any, doesn't matter, you will win very fast and have nothing to worry about

for pvp: pick the fastest, that way either you win and the target can't run away from you, or you loose and you can easily escape

python for brute force/multi-purpose but no speed, FdL for speed/brute force but no jump/cargo and limited power, or clipper for speed/brute force/multi-purpose but average shield/big target
