Q: How can I pre-order a copy as a gift?

I want to purchase the ED Mercenary edition pre-order for my son for a Christmas present, but since the purchase must be tied to an email which is tied to the download account, I would (as far as I can see) only be able to do this using his email, in which case he'd know as soon as he collects his email.

Obviously I want to pre-order to get the bonus content for him, but I don't want to tip him off before Christmas.

Can a boxed copy or a voucher/key be pre-ordered now, redeemable in December?

I've asked this on the forums, because I'm sure I'm not the only one who will ask this question.

Can't you create new email address - gmail springs to mind - and use that to order and give him the email along with the game? You can swap emails in your account later on IIRC.

The email itself is just a login username for the most part.

You can edit your email in the Account Information section on the store page after ordering, at least the option is there. How that affects game login I don't know, but if you change mail there then surely that would be updated.

I think in your "user settings" or what are they called you can change every info, name, email adress, so I guess an easy solution would be:
Create any email account, order the game, and when you give it to your son, you can edit the account info for his name&original email adress... I think this could work.

Got a reply from Frontier

There is currently no gifting in our store but this is something we are investigating. Do not purchase the game on your account if you wish to gift it as this will be tied to your account permanently. I am sorry to say the only way to be safe about this would be to buy it for your son as close to Christmas as possible. If there is a change with the gift system this will be announced in a newsletter. Apologies I am unable to aid you further with this

I believe that should work, yes. So long as you’re able to log into your account at Christmas then you’ll be able to go into Account Information and change the email address to any you wish. Is there anything more I can do for you?

So, Thanks Kenny Wildman, I have a workable solution. I am going to use my office email, then switch it to his address on Christmas Eve. Ho! Ho! Ho!

A friend gifted me my beta copy. He purchased it under whatever info he needed, gave it to me and I changed the info. It's actually quite simple and to my knowledge doesn't break any rules. All of the account info is able to changed from name and email address to billing and shipping.
