QoL: 4 pips to x

I fully agree.

I do have macros for it, so this suggestion would do nothing for me. But for many people this could be a nice small convenience feature and should've been in from launch.

I dont use macros on PC because i have periphrials to get the number of inputs i need for everything. plus it takes about a second to put 4 pips into one thing.

However I wouldnt mind it as a function.

Sure. I go to my Playstation Dualshock 4 controller and press down, left, left, up, left to get 4-2-0. I can do it with my eyes closed and pretty much as fast as the membrane d-pad can accept inputs.

But when you're under pressure from a decently flown FDL murderboat? You tap pips a lot and punching buttons a lot is hardly an interesting metric of combat prowess, I would suggest taking out that part and letting the pilots focus on timing and positioning instead. Hence -- a quality of life improvement.

When I was flying on PC, with "4 pips to sys/eng/wep" set on my extra mouse buttons, I was always exactly two clicks away from 4-2-0, 0-4-2, or 0-2-4, and I never missed any other configuration really.

I don't typicaly panic when im dealing with murder hobos (maybe because I've actively hunted those kinds of people?), but I definitely see your point on how the situation can be panic inducing for anyone in general. panic leads to mistakes and mistakes lead to delays.

Also thinking bout it you reminded me how much time you spend without any kind of special periphrial reaching across your keyboard for a function or swapping your hand between the mouse and the keyboard to press a button. I deffinitely do not miss those days.

You are right not everyone is going to have the luxury on PC of having everything accessible at their fingertips.

But i think regardless if you have those peripherals or not it would be a welcome change.

Thread necro time. Situation unchanged; On PC almost everyone who cares about pips runs macros or utilizes the mouse scrollwheel. Console plebs have no say in the matter, we're all manual pips gang whether we like it or not.

Being aware of one's current pips distribution, knowing what pips to allocate where and when, sure, these are all relevant skills in ED dogfights, especially in competitive PvP. In contrast, pure d-pad tapping speed simply doesn't feel like a very interesting skill to measure. 🤷‍♂️

Just out of curiosity, how would this work on a controller practically? which buttons would you remap for this?

I’d like a preset system. Change the current assignment so that the pip “moves” when the button is released rather than first pressed and then ...

  • HOLD \/ to switch between “assignment“ (ie current behaviour) and ”presets”
  • When in “assignment” mode, HOLD < or > or /\ to store the current pip distribution as a preset
  • When in “preset” mode, PRESS < or > or /\ to recall the appropriate stored distribution of pips
  • In both modes, pressing \/ would recall the “evenly distributed“ preset as it does now

That way you could store three custom presets of your choosing (plus the default 2-2-2) which would all be instantly recallable with one quick button press. I’m thinking ”ATTACK” ... ”ATTACK (but I need some goddamn shields“ ... and ... “ARGHHHHH ... LEG IT!!!!” would be mine ... :)

Map the d-pad left to "4 pips to sys", up to "4 pips to eng", and right to "4 pips to wep". Compared to the current situation, that would even leave one extra button to spare, because the reset pips button is unnecessary in this scheme.

Regardless of how pips happen to be distributed at any given moment, pressing two pips keys in succession would always provide the following configurations:

Up & right: 0-2-4
Right & up: 0-4-2
Left & up: 2-4-0
Up & left: 4-2-0

This is all very much a standard convention on the PC side, and that's also how I had my mouse macros set up when I was on my PC CMDR. "Pip to X" + "Delay 20ms" repeated four times. I definitely wouldn't put the user through waiting for a long press to register. There's simply no need to reinvent the wheel here so just having an input binding "4 pips to x" would be all most CMDRs would ever need, as far as pips management goes. It's a proven concept on PC.
