a return trip from one edge of the galaxy to another would take 666 hours

so, is space as big as you thought it was with a 25ly jump range? it's only 4000 jumps from one side to another.

I think my brain just fell out of my head. I understand that SPACE is big, I'm just forever impressed that, for better or worse, Elite has managed to be that big too.
 
Yep, those 4000 jumps aren't more than an unnoticeable fraction of things out there. Sure, nice trip - but pointless if just a trip from A to B.

A to B obviously would be pointless, but this gives you a rough idea of the mapsize, if nothing else.

Oh, aye, it does that, in a way. But again, it's just A -> B, without seeing anything besides hyperspace -> map -> hyperspace -> map...
 
I don't think this ever a journey I'd make. As you guys said, A -> B doesn't really seem hugely interesting in this game. However, just knowing the raw numbers as a metric? Very cool :)

that was the point of the post really, nobody would ever bother going out to the edge of the galaxy just to come back so they could say they'd gone the entire diameter in the first place

but it gives an idea of the maximum possible crows-eye journey. using the same ideas you could work out the time to travel around the galaxy in a circular 'orbit', which could be used to give you a rough idea on how long it would take to get to far distant objects in a circular course without travelling through the glactic core

so an "orbit" of the galaxy would take 1045 hours. (333*pi)

an "orbit" from the beta bubble area, or sol area, would take less time (Sag a* is 25,800ly away, so that is the distance of our orbit, so (100*(25,800/500)=86 hours*3.14) meaning that a total orbit from sol would take 270 hours.

divide that by 2 you got the time it'd take if the TV show "ST:VOY" was set in Ed

I don't even want to think about how long that would take, and yet I can see there being a news story in about 5 years stating that it has finally been done. The internet is full of wonderful folks who will do things like that :)
 
It's big but, so small compared to the universe. I doubt I'll travel more than a few hundred ly myself but, it's great knowing I could if I wanted to!
 
I like any post that helps explain the size of the galaxy.

the total area of the galaxy's disk is 7850000000ly2. and that's not taking into account that the galaxy isn't flat. it's volume is much more complicated to work out
