Quell's Guide to Choosing PlanZo DLC

Ok y'all, if y'all are like me, you're a completionist. You want every single part of the collection, regardless of whether you'll use it or not.

But, not everyone is like that. Some wanna start off slowly, getting only a few aspects, wait a bit, then get the rest. Others only want 1 part of the collection and ignore the rest.
To y'all, I say: WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU??!!

Ok, anyways, it made me think: what's the best combination of DLCs that'll bring the best bang for your buck? The answer: it totally depends on your play style. For this thread, I will be talking about how different DLC add different needs for different players, such as key species, key building pieces, and also sister packs. But before, let us take a brief look at the base game...

The base game of Planet Zoo came with a satisfying set of pieces, from brick walls to concrete to wooden, modern sets. We have a nice selection of stone and metal statues and satisfying signs. Basically, the build sets in the base game are basic. Nothing special or outta the ordinary.
The roster, on the other hand, isn't the best, but it isn't horrible. It has your ABC species, such as lions, tigers, and bears (oh my). Zebra, giraffe, elephant. Basically, it has most typical zoo species. Some strange inclusions, like the bonobo and Himalayan brown bear, but for those we have the much more popular chimpanzee and grizzly bear. However, there are also many gaps, such as kangaroos, jaguars, and penguins. Not to mention, there are entire continents that have only 1 species (saltie for Oceania, red deer for Europe, and Baird's tapir for South America). Yes, the base game catered heavily towards Africa, followed by Asia. Almost the entire roster was from those 2 continents, with 4 species from North America and then the 3 that I mentioned for Oceania, Europe, and South America.

So, that's where DLCs come in. Now I admit, if it were up to me, get all of them, but not everyone has the resources or interest to complete the collection. So, let's begin this little guide, shall we? (And y'all, if y'all have any suggestions, don't hesitate to add them)

DLCs with Key Species

Key species for each continent include:
  1. Africa
    • Arid animal pack - black rhino, dromedary camel, African crested porcupine
    • Africa pack - southern white rhino, meerkat
    • Tropical pack - red river hog
    • Grasslands animal pack - blue wildebeest, caracal
  2. Asia
    • Conservation pack - Przewalski horse, siamang, Amur leopard
    • Southeast Asia animal pack - clouded leopard, North Sulawesi babirusa
    • Wetlands animal pack - red-crowned crane, Asian small-clawed otter
    • Tropical pack - lar gibbon
  3. Europe
    • Europe pack - Alpine ibex, Eurasian lynx, European badger, European fallow deer
  4. North America
    • North America animal pack - American alligator, moose, puma
  5. Oceania
    • Australia pack - red kangaroo, koalas, southern cassowary
    • Grasslands animal pack - emu, red-necked wallaby
    • Twilight pack - common wombat
    • Oceania pack - North Island brown kiwi, Tasmanian devil, little blue penguin
  6. South America
    • South America pack - jaguar, giant anteater, Colombian white-faced capuchin
    • Wetlands animal pack - capybara
    • Grasslands animal pack - maned wolf
I may have missed some, but I think y'all get the point: there are a whole lotta missing species, some more noticeable than the others. Asia, surprisingly, seems to be suffering the most, despite having a large part of the base game with some key species, like pandas.

So, now that you know which key animals are missing, this little lost will help to determine what you should get next, for the sake of getting keystone species...

DLCs with Key Building Pieces/Sets

Now to the builder's side of things:
  1. Africa pack - the theme isn't bad, but what's important here are the walls, really
  2. Aquatic pack - the whole build set is important , especially the murals, the faux rocks and trees, and the flexicolor wooden pieces
  3. Arctic pack - the wood theme is what you want here. Versatile for any build
  4. Australia pack - the corrugated metal, the metal fences, and even the wooden signs are great for smaller budget zoo builds and even farm builds
  5. Conservation pack - backstage pieces (shovels, wheelbarrows, gardening supplies, etc.), but also the organic/plant pieces are nice for a modern, eco-friendly build
  6. Europe pack - the rustic build set is fantastic and key for building old style buildings
  7. Oceania pack - a heavy theme with Polynesian architecture, but the key pieces here are the thatch roofs and the nets
  8. South America pack - a heavy theme on Mesoamerican ruins, but the key pieces here are the bamboo sets
  9. Tropical pack - the stone pieces are fantastic and, honestly, an upgrade from the South America pack's Mesoamerican pieces. The thatch roofs also goes nice for an islands build, similar to the Oceania pack
  10. Twilight pack - my least favorite build set, so far, but some pieces aren't bad, like the metal fences and walls
So, as you can see, this list gives a little bit more understanding (I hope) as to what themes you need and where to find them...

Sister Packs

So now you know what DLC has what, but the question remains: which DLCs best compliment each other? Well, let's do it to it, then:
  • Best combinations for North America
    • North American animal pack + Twilight pack
    • North America animal pack + Arctic pack
  • Best combinations for Europe
    • Europe pack + Arctic pack
    • Europe pack + Twilight pack
  • Best combinations for South America
    • South America pack + Wetlands animal pack
    • Wetlands animal pack + Aquatic pack
  • Best combinations for Oceania
    • Australia pack + Oceania pack
    • Australia pack + Grasslands animal pack
  • Best combinations for Africa
    • Africa pack + Arid animal pack
    • Africa pack + Grasslands animal pack
    • Arid animal pack + Grasslands animal pack
  • Best combinations for Asia
    • Southeast Asia animal pack + Tropical pack
  • Best combinations for Key Building Pieces
    • Conservation pack + Aquatic pack
    • Conservation pack + Australia pack
    • Europe pack + Twilight pack
    • Tropical pack + South America pack
    • Tropical pack + Oceania pack

Well, you made it to the end. Hopefully you actually read all this instead of skimming through it (prove to me you read it)
Anyways, this isn't any kind of list based off of facts. It's my own personal opinion and the way I view each and every DLC. Others have different methods of acquiring expansions, and it could depend on your play style, region, or even if you like a certain animal or not.
But, I hope that this guide helped you to choose and expand your zoos. Welcome to the jungle
