Query: Attempt hotas swap over or just try using a controller?

So elite, I played until now, exclusively on flight stick. However since it doesn't run on my desktop, and I JUST got the new razerblade pro lappy for on the go game devning. I now have this new toy to play with. If you were in my situation. Would you attempt to scoot the Saitek X55 somehow onto the laptop. Or would you attempt to play elite with just a dope custom controller instead? Why would you do one, or the other. Also, this will be a fun litmus test because if the game runs great in Odyssey, it'd literally be on a clean install on a new compy.

I use a controller. Been liking my 8BitDo SN30 Pr0+ for maybe about a year now. Works for my Switch, PC, and tablet.

Works well enough taking the time to set it up through Horizons. Haven't really gotten it sorted for Odyssey yet though...

Oh I love those controllers, I use them for my custom raspi setup in the living room for playing arcade games when guests come over. They now have custom pairing options for the new emulationstation if you didn't know and were interested!

I am predominantly an xbox cmdr but i play on pc now.. I started on the controller but as soon as I got hooked on Elite i was itching to get my hands on throttle and stick. It was an still is the feeling of immersion for me, it's just so tactile!! I love it and will never go back, PC bois always try and convert me to Mouse and Keyboard and i know it's kinda superior in some ways (not enough to make a diff to my skill level) I still can't ever give up my HOTAS <3

Yeah i hear ya.. I say if you've got a funky new controller enjoy it!!! you can go anywhere then. One of the best pilots i know uses a controller, actually two of them do!

Whoa I totally misread this and went "Whoooaaahhh someone uses 2 controllers and is super good at this? I need to see this" then I read it better. Lol.

Me? Make the stick work. I have a controller I've used before when away from home for non-combat stuff, but stopped after a while. I'd rather play something else than fly ships without sticks.

I set up my controller similar to a hobby flight radio with roll and pitch on the right stick and yaw and thrust on the left stick.
The ships are sluggish enough in the speed changes that I can set pushing up to increase throttle and pulling back to lower it before the ship speed catches, and of course still boost. Then holding it back to reverse when needed. When landing gear is diploid though I set everything up to momentary impulse at full throws.

I used the buttons for pip management and the d-pad for directional thrusters, strafing up down left and right.

I use combos for other functions, like start plus the d-pad for looking around, etc.

Mind you, it isn't perfect, but works pretty well all things considered.

Hmmm... though I do love my HOTAS... now I'm thinking of horrible things like making a "Docking station cockpit" using a TV dinner stand and the hotas' desk hooks, then putting them and the pedals up into a USB hub... then plugging that into my laptop....

Ok, I've handled this in the developeriest way possible, an if statement.
I will first TRY to do the controller, if good, then great end statement.
If enjoyment of the game via controller is false, then next I shall attempt the dreaded living room tv stand hotas setup, likely to my wife's chagrin.
