You already mine for materials in your SRV, so that's been done.
"loot" is quite possibly going to be found (at least some of it, obviously not all of it) by mining asteroids, and "mining" cargo holds on ship wrecks.
So yeah, it is getting some love, really.
I really wouldn't say the mineral stuff in the SRV is mining.. I mean its pretty useless stuff as you cannot sell it?!!
I want to mine stuff in my SRV that I can sell.
I'd rather not have to drive around shooting at rocks to "mine" in an SRV. Instead, I'd much prefer the way Elite 2 and 3 did it. Land on the planet in a huge ship (like a Panther Clipper) and drop off several Mobile Mining Units. Then come back the next day to collect their cargo, giving you freedom to do something else in the meantime.

The FDL is one of the most used combat ships currently, making your statement odd, jump range is not that bad, once you are where you want to be, it is meant to be a relative short range fighter, and it is just that, and great at it's job.Huge lasers/Mcs + engineers on FSD = the Fer de lance will finally be usable for people who are not die-hard fans of it.
