Quest 2 has arrived

I am a happy bunny

So this arrived Wednesday and due to some annoying relatives and work i have only really gotten to have a proper play this evening and i love it, Im upgrading from a rift so for me its a huge step up.

Im finding all the things everyone said about the negatives such as the head strap, face plate to be accurate, i have already recieved a silicone faceplate and its better but yet to have a long session in it and it falls forward so im having to re adjust the headset to find the sweet spot. I wish the FOV was a little wider i can see the lens banding initially but that tunes out the more i play.

Other wise its fantastic, the sharpness is top notch and i have to really look to see any screen door and thats only white text on a dark background and thats only when im looking, during regular gameplay theres essentially no screen door. Texts are super clear. Really really pleased

Been playing wired and then with some router mods wirelessly, again need to have a longer session but right now im getting 90hz and 130mbps throughput, did a bit of bounty hunting at a Nav Beacon and its great, i can where my play space allows get up and walk around the cockpit, its great.

I upgraded my phone and sold the old one and my rift, added 20quid for this and so far, i will be adding an elite strap and a battery pack if the wireless continues to behave but otherwise its a massive thumbs up

It's good isn't it? :)

Let me know how you get on with the new strap and mask. My misses has recently started complaining about the strap so we bought a cheap halo one and mask from Ali Express. It's going to take a while.

I was quite pleased with the FoV. Obvs doesn't compare to index or pi but does compare favourably to the standards. My face shape anyway!

I use the Asp E for my test.

See how much of those large lights on the vertical struts you can see, if any.

My face shape (IPD of 68):
Q2 - a definite smudge of both
Cv1 - a teeny smudge of both
RiftS - a glow of lights?
Q2 with 5 mm lenses spacer - hint of glow

Oh and aparenty
120hz is in the pipeline!*
Sweet!

*not that there's any hardware that will be able to run Q2 max around yet...

Can I ask a question of you, please?

I’ve got a Rift S (originally had the CV1) - have you tried using a movie-watching program like BigScreen?

With the Rift S I can still see screen-door while watching a film which I find detracts from the experience. Is the Q2 better in this regard? If it was comparable to watching on a 1080p TV, I’d be very tempted to buy one.

i was having a play and watching a 4k you tube demo over virtual desktop and i wasnt seeing any screen door.

Im not the most sesative to things like that but for my part with the Q2 unless your looking for screen door effect you cant see any. some white text over black if your looking but otherwise its great

I spent an hour last night just sat in the ship yards cycling through all my ships (i own the lot) looking around the cockpits. I did this in my CV1 but the clarity of this is superb and over the wireless you can walk around the cockpit.

120hz is coming and this morning im going to test bumping the resolution up even more

TLDR
Compared to 1080p on my projector, Q2 is better.
SDE is still present but noticeably better than Q1/RiftS. To the point that if you hadn't heard of SDE, you probably wouldn't ever notice.

Hey dude.
I think it is a decent improvement.

My mate lent me his Q1 for a couple of days before I got my Q2.

Beloved RiftS died, had to go back to CV1 and just couldn't bear the screen door so had to choose between G2, Index and Q2. (In still glad I chose Q2!) In the interim my mate leant me his Q1.

The Q1 seemed to have a similar screen door to my RiftS, maybe not quite as good but defo in the same ball-park. Both noticeably better than CV1!

The night before I received Q2 I watched Matrix 2 on Q1's Amazon Prime app to see SDE.

Although I was impressed (coming from CV1) I found the SDE noticeable. It also seemed to make the screen... darker? It's not something I would choose to watch movies on. (I do have home cinema so I am a bit fussy here.) Also Q1 is front heavy so not comfy at all.

Q2? Lighter and so much better. You can still see SDE but you have to look.

To put this into perspective, I'm very sensitive to SDE; you have probably guessed the sole reason I upgraded was entirely down to SDE. I think cranking up HMD resolution and SS in Elite and the CV1 looks good. It's just the shocking SDE! Coming from RiftS it's just too in your face.

My misses tried watching something on Q2 and I asked her what she thought of SDE (she had commented on the 'veil' in CV1), but she had no idea what I was going on about. I had to really describe it because she wasn't seeing it.

The SDE in the Q2 is totally different to the mesh like veil of the CV1. I would describe it as the image being made of tiny dots but you have to look hard to see it.

I have now watched 3 movies on the Q2. Ignoring my Q1 experiment, that's infinitely more than before. I reckon, if Q3 improved the same as Q2 from Q1, there wouldn't be any screen door at all.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the reply - it sounds like the clarity of picture is around what I’m after. I found the CV1 to be like watching films on a CRT telly, and the Rift S had just too much of a visible “grid” over the film image.

Pleasure!

If you thought the RiftS's SDE was just a bit too much, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. :)

And the way I see it, if you're not happy with it, return that bad boy!

Good point, can’t just use Prime for next-day delivery and The Expanse 😁

Edit: one more question - what video card do you have and how have you found performance going from Rift S to Quest 2?

When I moved from CV1 to Rift S I found the performance very similar, probably due to the 10fps decrease.
