Quest 2 & non steam version of game

Hi,

I've just bought the Oculus Quest 2, hoping someone can tell me how I get this working in ED - I have the frontier launcher version of the game, not steam - Is it possible to get it working without the steam version of the game? I can't for the life in me figure out how to do it, nothing showing up in the game settings when I have the headset connect to PC, don't even know what I'm looking for in there!

Do I need the steam version of the game and then activate it through virtual desktop on the headset? If so, can I convert my account to steam or do I have to buy a new steam version outright? -- totally confused! thanks in advance if anyone can help.

It’ll work fine with the FDev-bought version - I’m assuming you have the Oculus software installed on your PC and are using the USB 3 Link:
  • enable “Unknown Sources” in the Oculus Settings on the PC, General tab
  • Start ED in flatscreen, go to the graphics options and select “HMD Headphones” in the 3D section
  • Restart ED for the settings to take effect
The Touch controllers won’t work with Elite, so you’ll need either a game pad, HOTAS or KB&M. I use an old Xbox 360 wireless pad with “default context” settings and I think it works fine. You’ll probably need to rebind f12 (recenter HMD view) to something more convenient - I have it on Right Stick Click, R3.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the best way of playing Elite 😁

Been playing since OQ2 launch.

what’s your set up? Are you using link cable or the Oculus Paid for Virtual Desktop app?

Link cable came out of beta last week and is imho fantastic for elite. You should just see your Oculus dash on the desktop and be able to click elite. Same way Oculus users have been doing for years.

don’t know about the touch controllers full functionality but they work fine to access Oculus dash virtual desktop (not paid version) or for recentering view. Once in your pc desktop they work fine to navigate etc. I use a HOTASso have no idea how to use controllers to fly and play ED.

just re-read OP. I don’t think your connected to the PC. What cable have you got?

Hey Guys, thanks for all the help... Arioch, I was pretty much doing everything you said - turns out I was almost doing the right thing ☺ I never noticed a tiny little notification that came up on my second monitor from steamvr whenever I connected the headset telling me to reset it. I did, and ED popped up in the Oculus link screen whereas before it didn't show... bloody reboot! typical, I work in IT too 😀

Pretty much blown away with how different it feels - Got a pad loiter fine straight away as my stomach lurching from doing a full 360 back towards the slot to start again, I've been playing since Beta! ...VRlegs gonna take some time I think ☺ Now, I just need to figure out how the hell I'm gonna navigate in the galaxy map! lol, that is weird in there. I'll go hunting through some other threads for that.

Thanks for your help both, really appreciate it.

Regarding the GalMap: it'll depend on your controls.
Some players report good results with navigating the GalMap with kb&m - never tried that. I have a thumbstick on my HOSAS that I use for changing the viewpoint, that works pretty well to put things in the right perspective (x/y stick movement, z stick twist, zoom on a thumbwheel, viewing direction on the thumbstick).

Hmm, I have an X52, it has a horrible little mouse control thumbstick. I do have a game controller, maybe that will bet better, I'll have a play around with the control bindings, Thanks.

Controller GalMap is very easy - one stick moves the selector around in x + y with a button press to enable z, triggers zoom you in + out, the other stick lets you rotate around.

I set up my hotas to fly through the galmap then use a handy thumb stick on my throttle to zoom in and out and one of the top joystick buttons to select.

Tabs I have the same set of control for everything - paddles on the throttle.

I've played ED in VR for nearly 5 years, HTC Vive to Index to Quest2. I have used both VD & link, the link is better. I use T.16000 Dual stick & Throttle. I got sick of the paucity of buttons with the T.Flight Hotas X. Now I don't need modifier keys, hahaha. You'd be surprised how many binds needed in pancake play, aren't necessary in VR. It's a different world.
