Quest 3 Link Cable - Tearing and Jittering

Hello guys,

maybe you can help me, cause the Meta Support was devastatingly incompetent.

In general, my Quest Setup is running pretty good with a stable framerate and a good looking picture (even in Stations, that will be important later).

But sometimes the picture starts to tear and jitter. It starts with a huge tear at the edge of the picture and afterwards the picture shakes like crazy. Sometimes I can even see double images (as if the two screens were not in sync).

Most of the times I can solve this by taking the headset off and putting it on again. This makes the Quest shortly go to sleep and then reactivate. But sometimes, even that doesn't help.

Most of the times, this is when opening a the Starport Menu or one of its sub menues, (rarely) when opening the Galaxy Map or (very very rare) when approaching a station. But it is not a reliable method. Sometimes I play for an hour and visited several stations and nothing happens. Sometimes I spend a day outfitting and switching back and forth but it doesn't happen. And then I have a session like today, when it happens in the first station I visit.

Fun thing is, I have no performance issues in stations besides this. Even in larger Stations or settlements, the game is running fine and stable.

I tried to set down my resolution (to check if this might be a performance issue nonetheless) and I tried this on several occasions, but it still did happen. In some sessions even more often than in others. So I doubt this is purely performance related, even though it seems to have to do something with Elite loading something.

I also tried switching between Odyssey and Horizons, but it is the same in both.

Meta Support suggested reinstalling the drivers, then reinstalling the whole software suite, removing and setting up the headset before starting elite. After that, they kept just replying the same answeres. I tried everything of this, nothing helped.

I tried changing the encode Bitrate in the Oculus Debug tool. Had it on 400, raised it to 500, dropped it to 200. Always occured in approx. the same amount.

Some sessions it is worse than on others. Did a lot of titan bombing runs on Cocijo, flew several times from Cornwallis to the Titan, no problems. Today I just visited The Blaster and had it instantly.

I am playing with Meta Quest Link software and the Frontier Elite version, no SteamVR attached or running in the background.

I know, this is a very ominous problem but maybe someone of you more experienced with VR has an idea that I could try.

Happy about every little idea and input, because this is really stealing the fun of the game.

Cheers, Jan

I’m playing on Quest 3, RTX 4070ti, i7 11700, AirLink, stand-alone launcher for Elite.

Since the Ascendancy update I’ve seen the sort of behaviour you describe but more commonly regular stutters and freezes for around few seconds at a time. On rare occasions these stutters can cause my headset to throw a complete wobbly and behave like you describe. It may be network related. I play many other VR games, several of them very demanding in performance, and never get this sort of severe image tearing / separation / degradation in them. There is a thread about frame rate drops being experienced by other players here:
…and there is also an issue report that I think is worth contributing to:

Hey folks,

thanks for the update Arioch. I am not sure if my problem is Elite related. I found this forum post in the meta support forum that exactly describes my problem (the video attached looks exactly like my problem in elite).

I was hoping maybe someone of you would have experienced this with their Quest as well ad found a solution is was not smart enough to find.

Try listing out you system specs, and the settings you use in oculus and in ED
I attached files with everything you asked for.

Ah, I’ve not seen those vertical line problems before. The nearest I’ve had is horizontal areas getting a weird pixelated effect with odd lighting that gradually gets brighter than the rest of the screen - this is related to sliced encoding when using Link.
