Quest 3 Wireless Settings

Hi all

I have looked in the forums and cannot really see what I need to do in order to play ED wireless. I have just ordered the BOBOVR S3 Pro as I want to go wireless rather than being tethered (what I use now).

Some say use remote desktop (my PC is hard wired to the router) and others say to use something else (cant remember what it is).

Can one of you good people point me in the right direction please.

System Specs:

i7 13700K
32GB Ram
RTX 4090
Too much HD space to list.

Virtual Desktop is your friend (not on steam!)

You connect via that and then you can dig into the world of VR tinkering.
I'm 100% sure a better person with a guide will come along and point you in the right direction.

VR is so worth it

I just use the Meta desktop software and connect via the built-in Link (via USB3 cable) or AirLink (my preferred method, via my internet router which is in the same room I play in). Stand-alone launcher for Elite.

All you need to do is install the software and go to Settings/General and enable “Unknown Sources” before running Elite. Select AirLink in your Quest 3 settings (click the time/Wi-Fi/battery bit on the left of the menu bar to bring up quick settings) and it should see your PC. Once you’re connected to your PC in VR, launch the game, go to the graphics settings and choose “HMD headphones” from the 3D drop-down list.

I'm a fan of Virtual Destop for WiFi VR and its inbuilt OpenXR capabilites which for me give better performance and bypasses the need for Steam / SteamVR / the Oculus App or Airlink, none of which are needed.

However you have to buy it for around £19 and your PC needs to be Ethernet cable connected to you WiFi router

How I connect is detailed in this post.

I picked up a Quest 3 a few weeks back, upgrading from the HTC Vive Pro. I've been using Steam Link and it's been fine.

To my knowledge, Elite will bypass Steam VR in the end as it has native "Oculus" support. It runs just fine via AirLink or USB cable for me.

Are you 100% sure you have done ALL of these steps without missing any. If so it should work.
  1. Install OpenXR Toolkit on you PC, set the on-screen menu hotkeys to you pereference (see note below)
  2. Install OpenComposite Runtime Switcher on you PC and have its switch button set to launch with OpenComposite NOT SteamVR
  3. Purchase Virtual Desktop from the Meta Store and install on the Q3
  4. Install the companion Virtual Desktop streamer app on your PC, which need to be running
  5. Set Virtual Desktop Streamer Options OpenXR Runtime to VDXR
  6. Create a desktop icon to launch EDLaunch.exe /VR (can be Steam or Frontier version in my tests)
  7. Put on the Q3 headset and power on
  8. Using one of the handset controllers launch Virtual Desktop
  9. Then using my mouse launch ED from the the desktop icon
NOTES:
  1. Virtual Desktop requires your PC to be ethernet cable connected to your router
  2. I also use a dedicated 5GHz WiFi range extender (cable connected to my main router) to WiFi connect my Q3 giving me 1200Mbs connection speed
  3. OpenXR Toolkit applies some simple post-processing to adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation of the images displayed in the headset, and is NOT absolutley necessary
  4. The OpenComposite Runtime Switcher prevents SteamVR from launching
  5. Ensure the /vr binary in your desktop launch icon is outside the " " quotes
  6. You can creat a /novr binary desktop to launch the game in 2D mode

Nice advice, a couple of observations ( caveat, I'm using a Pico 4U not a Q3 but they're the exact same SoC )

OpenComposite, for me, only works if it's set to be the 'default' runtime instead of SteamVR. If I leave Steam as the default and put EliteDangerous64 into the list of apps for OpenComposite, it will still launch SteamVR instead. IDK why, it used to be fine without setting OC as default.

Virtual Desktop with VXDR, OXR and OC definitely gave me better latency than SteamVR for the same target resolution but, using WiFi 6, instead of my USB-C cable, completely undid the performance benefit. It became noticeably less smooth and occasional frame glitches with WiFi. I run WiFi now and again still but the performance always sends me back to my cable. Personal preference I guess.

Hint: Keep VD off to the side and not in front of the monitor. When ED starts to load, use the mouse to click through the cut scene. For me, I can't do the same with the pointer on VD. That's my only gripe about VD, it requires a controller whereas I can just use my hands for everything else.

BTW with Virtual Desktop, I'm using the reverse tether mod to make VD recognise my PC via the USB cable, otherwise it only wants to connect wirelessly ( just in case you decide later you want to keep using VD but with a cable instead ).

For me item 2 in my list "OpenComposite Runtime Switcher" when installed allows me to choose between launching ED in OpenComposite or Steam

So after some googling I have finally got it working.

I had to delete D3D11.dll from the ED game folder and it fired up first time.

Now I just need to tune it a bit.

Thanks for all the help.
