Question about ASP.

Hi,

I just couldn't resist and bought asp. I thought asp was really good trading ship. But it takes only 88 tons of cargo. Do you put smaller shields and gas tanks on your asp to get more cargo space or is asp really limited for 88 tons. Feeling bad already :(

My Asp takes 116 tons of cargo. Downgraded the size 5 shield to a size 3 and took cargo space in all but the sensor slot -> 116 tons. :)

yeah downgrade shields, so that you get more cargo space but if you do, remember, your Asp is now trading oriented and not suitable that much for combat!

If you're gearing for trading in an Asp, drop shields from 5 slot to 3 slot, and then you can get 104 with shields. Don't use basic discovery sensors or a docking computer and you can get it to like 112. If you go shieldless, I think you can squeeze a bit more out of it, but I don't recommend it. Go with the A3 shields and 104 cargo, and you're on par with a Type 6.

A downgraded fuel tank does not provide any cargo space, and the minimal increase in jump distance is not worth the decrease in total range.

The Asp can hold 120 cargo with full racks and a class 3 shield generator, so that's how I fit mine for trading. If you're going into combat, sacrifice the cargo capacity for a class 6 shield.

That's good to know. And I guess you won't need fuel scoop if you are not going after rares. I hate having multiple ships. It's much faster to go to nearest outfit and change the role. That's why asp :)

Edit: forgot to mention that I used my 20% discount from community goal. Asp for 5.3 millions:) Thats nice reward from goal.

That's what I do with my Clipper. If I'm just doing straight trading I go to an A4 shield and have 232 tons but when I'm doing a long rare run as I am now I go down to 190ish and have an A6 shield so I can bounty hunt while I'm waiting for my full allocation to spawn.

For trading you are best off using a Type-6, the Asp isn't really a trading upgrade. I have one that I've kitted out for exploration with some mining thrown in. You could take a different tack and kit it out for combat too. It's very versatile, but it's not really a truck.

It fits more than a t6 though.... How is that not a trade vehicle?

Because it costs 6 x as much as a T6, so your cargo capacity per cred of purchase is a lot less. What the Asp gives you is options on how to trade and how to balance trade and survivability / BH / stand or flee from interdictions, etc.

As the guys above said, downgrade shield to 3. It is more than enough for trading (don't go looking for dogfights, though).

You can also get rid of the discovery scanner for an extra cargo bay.

That should leave you with about 120t.

: )

With a type A FSD upgrade, type d equipment (except shields), the Asp goes further than a type 6, has better defenses, and can carry just as much.
It makes a great (but expensive) trader.

I like the Asp alot better than I like Type 6. More cargo, better survivability, faster and more manouverable, better shields, better weapons and you can always sell it when you move to T7 or the Implerial Clipper (better again than T7 with just a few more million :) B FSD gives you a range of 19Ly or so, so that's plenty. I have a trade route with 18 Ly distance, so I can jump from station to station.

The reason I trade in an Asp rather than a Type6 is simple - I prefer to be able to defend my cargo! I'll still negotiate with the rats if they are reasonable about it but if they get too greedy or they've got a fat enough bounty for me to chance it I want at least an even break on which of us gets reduced to space dust. So no, I didn't downgrade my shields and I gave up cargo space so that I could carry some shield cells and an auto maintenance module. I survive the fight longer and if he shoots out my drives or sensors I'm not forced to self-destruct. I can still carry enough cans to make trading worth my while but this snake has kept its fangs.

if/when the time comes that I want a bigger ship, I'll probably buy a Type7 but there's no way I'll keep it any longer than it takes to earn the credits to allow me to trade it in for a Python - similar logic applies. Same for the space cow, if you ever see me flying one it's because I haven't earned enough to trade it for a 'conda yet. If I'm going to be carrying loads of stuff that pirates want, I also want to be carrying loads of stuff that enables me to keep it :)

I'm aiming to build out a bounty hunting (Miner too if that's fixed ) asp. I too was impatient and jumped on it without enough money leftover for insurance. All my money up until then was bounty hunting money. After getting the asp, i had to trade silver (current cargo hold is only 40 ton) so only 35k profit each run. It looks like i'll be trading until my armament is capable of handling 60+k bounties since interdiction damage and lack of numbers makes hunting the lower priced ships not cost effective. The boost in npc interdictions helps, since i dont take damage from that and I've only had to run from one (master fed drop ship wasn't scared of my mostly stock asp) so I make a bit extra on the side while trucking 40 tons of silver.

Of course the main reason for asp was my 10 year son who was so impatient :) But we both love the view. Now I know why it's called asp explorer. You won't miss that beautiful scenery.
