Question about availability of system data in local space

Hi guys, sorry if this has been asked to death.

In local space, some systems have data available automatically, some do not. I can go to the galmap and look even if I haven't been there sometimes, but other times I cannot. This is regardless of whether I am currently docked or not.

How does this work?

Same question goes for whether I can buy system data at a shop or not. Sometimes I can sometimes I can't.

How does that work?

For whatever reason your ship computer may not have the data but can pick up stations.

The better question for me is... Why can't you buy system data while docked at a station of said unexplored star system... You'd think a station would have a map of the neighborhood??

True but I don't mean that. I'm talking about the systems where when you highlight them on the galmap, the system data icon is red - you can't even see the stations.

It's not to do with systems that are inhabited either, I have access to some empty systems too

Not sure then. It would be nice to get FD's rationale for which systems are considered unknown by the ship's computer and which ones aren't if they are within the human zone.

I think I get it now. Not 100% confirmed but I'm pretty sure that if there is a proper station there, it will be viewable on the galmap without prior visit, but if it only has outposts or is just plain old uninhabited, then you can't
