Question about buying the boxed edition.

Hello Commanders,

I would like to buy the boxed edition of Elite Dangerous for someone who had the original game as a kid. It will be very nostalgic for them to have the box and manual (shame theres no cassette) but they don't have an optical drive and I want to make sure that they can just download the installer and use their product key.

Does anyone know if this could be the case?

Thanks

You can indeed! Infact the installer on the disc is the original release, so it would have to be upgraded anyway.

The boxed edition is really just a collectors item.

Which is why I want it. :D

That's entirely the reason I'm getting it, as a collectors item/blast from the past. Maybe I wrongly assumed there would be nice manual included like there was with the original.

The closest you are going to get is print out the PDF manual.
.
Or you could buy one of the new novels as well.

What's actually included in the boxed version then?

From the store:
Contents Include:

• Elite Dangerous on DVD (requires online connection)
• Elite Dangerous access key
• Quick Start Manual

Please Note

• The boxed copy of the game contains a key for activating the game on your account. This key will ship with the box, so cannot be claimed until this arrives.

• The DVD disc only includes the installation files for the PC version of Elite Dangerous, the Mac version can be downloaded from the 'Downloadable Products' section of your Elite Dangerous account, once set up.

Did you get get cassette tape...?

Well, just as useful as the DVD is really.
.
I do, however, still have my original BBC B Elite Boxed cassette version, the 5 1/4 boxed version, the Master version, the Archimedes 3 1/2 disc version somewhere in the attic.
.
The Premium boxed sets do appear on ebay from time to time.

There is a short manual in the boxed version, im looking at it..... Though you would need to buy the product code separately. The kickstarter backer reward one is much better (i own both the Kickstarter boxed version and the little DVD/slipcase versions).

Why do you say you need to buy the product code separately?

Nice. I would have donated towards the Kickstarter but I only realised it was even a thing just after it ended.

Given that it's the same price to get the boxed DVD version, and you do get a manual, albeit a slim one, I'm going for that option. Thanks for all the help Commanders.
