Newcomer / Intro Question about crashed ships

So I have seen various threads about getting materials from crashed ship sites and have a few questions, if anyone is willing to take the time to help a relative newcomer out.

So far I have visited the Cobra crashed by the poor guy who got duped into genocide, a crashed anaconda in Orrere, and 2 crashed ships that were just tip-offs where I retrieved a black box for a payday.
My questions are:
1. Is the Jameson who crashed the Cobra the same Jameson that the station in Shinrart Dezhra is named for?
2. Do the crashed anaconda's in Koli Discii and HIP 16613 have more things to make them worth visiting then the one in Orrere? (The Orrere one is just crap, imo...I can get faster G4/5 raw materials visiting decent planets with vulcanism than at that Orrere site without the tedium of having to relog over and over).

Hip 16613 has 3 data points and 3 raw mats.
Easy landing, easy driving.

Oh, so data points as well as the raw materials and the driving is easy. That's not as bad then. Orerre has like..no data points and the driving is a pita. Makes it more worthwhile at least. I read that the one in Koli Discii is the same so will probably give them a visit at least once. Thanks!

1. Yes
2. No, unless you consider sightseeing "valuable"

Regarding #1...that's cool. Nice to know the poor guy at least got a nice Memorial! I felt pretty badly for him after listening to his final audio logs.
Regarding #2...ahahah, I do...sort of. But once you've seen one crashed ship you've seen them all, right?

True. The crashed ships, both named ones and the random crash sites are just a flavour. I personally enjoy them and they sometimes contain something valuable, be it crafting or sentimental value, but that's about it. Not that I'm complaining. If anything, Elite's galaxy could use more things to see and discover. :)

I did really enjoy the Jameson crash site. The extra flavor from Jameson's logs was pretty awesome. Orrere crash in comparison was a total let down. Only one thing to scan, and no information at all came with it...just something to turn in for some cash. I guess my reason for the question was because Orrere's crash was such a let-down after the Jameson one.
Doing the 80,000 Ls flight out to the Koli Discii crash right now, so I guess I do enjoy a little bit of checking these things out. heheh

I'm 4 weeks new to the game, and my exploration asp was the first ship (of the 8 ships I currently own) that I fully engineered, so I definitely do enjoy the exploration and discovery aspect of the game.

I think it's great. Many people fall into the grinding pit of Elite and only chase money, ships or engineering without smelling the proverbial flowers by the road. :)

Nobody goes to the Orrere ship twice. ;)

Koli Discii lets you fill up with palladium if you want to make a bit of moolah whilst mats farming.

HIP 16613 - is worth the trip for the mats and the comms points (plus messing your pants the first time the visitor appears  ).

Hahah...for sure I'm not going back to the Orrere crash.

I visited Koli Discii crash and am glad I did; the crash itself was not so great, but the nearby abandoned settlement had a nice spooky story told by the comm scan points. Won't be going back there again, but glad I visited it.

I just arrived in system HIP 16613 and am going to surface map the water world and then head over to the planet with the crash. I haven't seen anything regarding this "visitor" in posts that recommended crash sites, so you have me intrigued (and a bit apprehensive).

Thanks for your reply!

Hmm... Pretty sure Jameson memorial’s named after Peter Jameson not John.

OP, for reference, Peter Jameson was the first person to get a Pilots Federation Elite rank.

John Jameson (the pilot of the crashed Cobra) is generally thought to be one of his descendants. Son/grandson/great-grandson - I don’t think which one is officially confirmed as it’s drawing from lore from previous games which isn’t necessarily lore for ED.

John’s fate only came to light about a year and a half ago when his crashed Cobra was found.

Really? How cool. Thanks!

I’m not 100% on Jameson memorial. Not sure there’s anything stating it definitively, so I could be wrong.

John would have been ‘fate unknown’ so could conceivably have had a station named after him, but equally a pilot being ‘fate unknown’ wouldn’t have been rare.

Peter would probably have been a more significant figure for the Pilots Federation in general terms.

Having said that... with Peter’s power and influence, he could potentially have been behind naming a station for his lost son/grandson...

OP, I guess the moral of all this is that there’s a lot in the galaxy that we as independent pilots don’t know. And lots that isn’t publicly or definitively known in general!

What was the default Commander name in the original Elite, is it a nod to that?

Cmdr Jameson. So yeah, in out of game terms, almost certainly. Though I think it was Jameson as a default for F:E2 and FFE too... (OP, just in case you don’t know, those are Frontier: Elite 2, and Frontier First Encounters, so basically ED is Elite 4.)

It alll gets a mixed up a bit as to who’s who in terms of the Jamesons and the games!

Also, go visit Dav's Hope. Well worth a visit.

OH, for sure, I've been there a few times already. It was rather close to my starting system so I visited it before I even started actually doing engineering. <3 the place.

#2 is wrong.
Bug Killer has very valuable data to harvest which is not available at any of the other Anacondas.
Jameson's crash site has data but no raw mats.

I just finished filling up completely on the data that Bug Killer gives. Filled up SO fast, so definitely a site that gets a bookmark. From a purely entertainment value, I also thought it was great. I loved the 4 audio logs that told the story of the crash and the "Visitor" that showed up while i was in the area got the ol' adrenaline going for a second...even though I had forewarning, it was a bit more than expected. lol

Thank you to everyone who responded in this thread. I have visited all the locations now and am glad I did. If i could go back in time to give myself advice though, it would be to visit Jameson and Bug Killer, but skip the others until I'm headed that way for some other reason as well.

Stuff it, Imma get the old 'Tijuana Taxi' out and go exploring!

To be fair Orrere and Koli give a better variety of raw mats than Bug Killer does.
