If I wanted to delete the saved game to start over will I lose any cosmetic items such as ship skins like the gold sidewinder that comes with the Commander Deluxe Edition.

there is no need to delete your save game though.. whatever mistake you make, it can be fixed in Elite..
I also deleted my save 11 times when first start playing, but, later down the line i figured out that wasn't needed. You make mistakes in reallife as well.. No delete savegames in reallife.. lol.
But af course, do as you please.. That's the beauty of Elite..
