It's definitely not an MMO like EVE online; it uses a twitch-based combat system where you are flying your ship with a joystick (or mouse or gamepad or keyboard) rather than the "hit the skill button/wait for it to cool down" style you see in EVE. I guess you can say it is a single player game in a shared galaxy with other single players*; you may find yourself in combat with another player from time to time and you may choose to group up with others to play cooperatively.



*You also have the option of playing offline or online single player, taking away any multiplayer aspects entirely.
