Engineers Question about Engineers

I haven't been playing that long and have been Bounty Hunting in the RES near Jenner Hub. I've bought a Viper MK3 and upgraded it a bit; got about $300 in the bank.

Anyway, I just got a message from Tod 'The Blaster' McQuinn saying to go see him about upgrading my weapons. Sounds cool but when I look on the Galaxy Map it's about 148LY away and will take 34 jumps. Before I do that, I just want to know if it's worth it at the moment? Reluctant to leave this RES because it's so close to a hub that has a lot of services.

Thanks,

jayrdi

Did you mean 300Cr or 300K Cr?

Not that it is totally relevant: what is relevant is whether or not you have any of the Introduction criteria that Tod will want (I think it was bounty vouchers from memory) and then whether you have collected any of the materials/ commodities he will need for modifications.
I suggest an immediate visit to inara.cz - go to the engineers tab and click on Tod - that will give you the entry criteria and then you can look at the blueprints he has to offer.

Whether you think it worthwhile to spend hours of time improving the Viper with custom modifications depends how long you intend using it for, I guess.

Personally, I would not worry about it too much straight away. Get around to it when you want to and if you want to do it, but there is no rush.

Well on the on hand you don't want to spend too long grinding upgrades for a ship that you're not likely to keep. But on the other hand, it increases your reputation with the engineer which allow you better mods in the future. And just a few grade 1 mods can make a real difference and are easy to apply. As suggested earlier, definitely check out inara.cz to see what's available what materials you will need.

I spent absolutely ages in the Diamondback Scout in a Res myself. I loved that ship. They're still worth keeping even after you move onto other ships. I continue to make heavy use of my Cobra and Vultures for example.

But if you are enjoying yourself in a Res then just continue doing that. If it turns into a grind then do something else. Go along to an engineer if there's something you particularly want or are limited by. e.g. upgrading the power plant on a Vulture.

What do I do after I bring the Engineers whatever they initially ask for? Do I bring them more of the same? And how do I collect bounties for the Blaster guy? Rather lost.

According to http://inara.cz/galaxy-engineer/6 , you need to have earned at least 15 bounty vouchers to even learn of his existance. You then have to bring him 100,000 Cr worth of Vouchers (can't remeber if he accepted Alliance vouchers in general or only in-system vouchers) to get basic access to his workshop. After that, you can bring him more Alliance vouchers to improve your reputation with him, or you can simply bring him the materials he needs to craft your weapons upgrades.

Don't waste your time with that just yet. Inevitably, any upgrades that he offeres require more power. which you don't have at the moment. Keep making money for now.

Fly more missions, upgrade ya ship and repeat until you get a decent sized ship you would like to keep a while then go see Todd, he ain't going anywhere.

Also, work smart not hard, there are several ways to gain rep with ALL Engineers, not necessary to grind for weeks.

You can also keep and/or exchange modded modules.

Good luck CMIV
