Newcomer / Intro Question about Exploration data

So I see since the update you get your name displayed if you are the first to discover stars/planets etc, great idea, I certainly take more notice now when i'm flying through puppis sector a5-7 3-shillings+6p!

couple of questions
1. Do I have to do a detailed surface scan to get credit in addition to just looking at it for a bit with my regular scanners
2. Does it matter where I sell the data federation/empire/independent?
3. Do I still get credit if I scan and sell while in solo mode

Thanks in advance

1) You need to fully scan the planet, but you do not need a DSS for that. The DSS just increases payout.

2) No. But you will gain a little rep for selling data. I went from Friendly to Allied with an Empire sub-faction after selling a few millions worth of data to them.

3) Yes, game mode makes no difference.

Also, keep in mind, its first to sell the data, not first to scan. Not usually an issue though, at least once you are far from civilized space. Just be aware, most of the major nearby sightseeing locations have already been thoroughly scanned by others. Don't expect to see many unexplored systems for example in the California Nebula. You want first claim on interesting locations, you're going to have to travel. However, closer to home, still lots of unexplored systems when you get a few hundred LY out.
