Question about exploration data

Tried to do a search on the forums for this, but came up blank:

Exactly what does exploration data count towards when turned in?

I know that it's supposed to be an easy way to get permits for Sirius and such, and at least one of the engineers(Farseer, IIRC) levels up upon recieving exploration data. But what about superpower ranks? To clarify: NOT reputation, but RANK. Can I get to Empire Baron by turning in exploration data in Empire controlled systems?

There should be a complete list of everything one can achieve from delivering data, both where and who to give it to.

Does anyone have such a list?

Selling exploration data will gain you reputation with the minor faction that controls the station (base, etc) you were selling at. In turn, that can give you major faction (the superpowers) rep, but not rank.

You can only gain rank via the military missions, but AFAIK, increasing your rep with minor factions can help you get to those quicker. If I'm right, then you'll want to sell enough exploration data to turn to Allied with one Imperial minor faction, then move on elsewhere, sell enough data to top out your rep with that other faction. Repeat until you run out of data to sell.

I don't know about any such list, but it should also be noted that beyond the things you already mentioned, exploration data can also be used to boost a faction's influence, if you're playing the BGS (background simulation).

Also, I assume you want the Baron rank to buy a Clipper, so good luck and enjoy your Clipper once you do get it!

Yeah, I know I need to take military missions to do the actual rank-up, but everything in between(0-100%) can be done at least by doing trade missions where it has superpower influence. I just hoped that exploration data might count against it the same way :)

I have no idea what BGS is :p

And yeah, I intend to get both the Clipper and the Corvette, so I've got my work cut out for me for a long time :p After ~1050 hours of play, I have 10 of the smaller ships, but most of those hours have been out in the black, so I currently have a bankroll of only ~Cr340M(with another ~Cr750M in assets), but I need to do some other stuff eventually, if I'm ever going to afford A-rating a Cutter AND a Corvette, at least if I'm gonna do that before I get tired of playing... The last time I stopped playing ED, I were away for ~18 months before picking it up again... I know that the fastest and easiest way to get rich quickly in this game, is through combat, but I really SUCK at combat :/ I even get my a** handed to me in an A-rated FDL, in SOLO... I've tried to do some git guddening, but to no avail... I'm just a really lousy fighter pilot [haha]

You can "rank up" with Fed or Imp by other ways than military combat missions. Most of my ranking up was not due to military combat missions. It's been a while for me, so I can't give a comprehensive list, but delivering data is another way. That is, data delivery missions from a local minor faction aligned with the Maj Faction you want that involve delivering data they have to another minor faction in another station. You can also "buy" rank by contributing when they ask for money (mission screen), but that presumes you have the cash to blow to begin with.

If you are having a hard time in combat, it might be due to engineering. The NPC ships are engineered, and if you haven't, they have quite an advantage if you are not an experienced combat pilot.
