Question about factions

I see the same or similar faction names repeated throughout systems, from Fed to Imp space. Factions starting with the words Purple, or Blue, or Jet ... etc.

Are these factions related in any way? Are these like local branches of some shadowy holding companies that are pulling strings from beyond? If I gain rep in Blue Power Commodities in Wolf 359 does that do anything for my rep in Blue Trading Company 5 jumps away? It would be nice to know it's all connected somehow and not just randomly generated faction names using a list of keywords.

I suspect that a lot of the faction names are randomly generated from a set of keywords ("Blue", "Purple", "Jet", "Hand", "Gang" etc.) - sometimes with the home system name included.

It's definitely possible for factions to span multiple systems, though - generally when they start expanding from their home system. The Pilot's Federation is a good example of this, as are systems where a permit is required - the controlling faction should have a presence in a nearby system, allowing you get enough reputation to acquire a permit.
