question about 'fuel star' map feature

Hi everyone

So it came up for discussion in one of my e:d discords about the fuel star feature, where the map plots the last scoopable star before you run out of fuel.

So my question is... how reliable is this feature? I would like to turn off my star filter so I can see more interesting stars again, but not if I'm at risk of getting stranded.

I've heard it doesn't recalculate for scooping you do on the way, so it might indicate you're on the last fuel star too early. I don't care about this... what I do care about though, is it not showing up or showing up too late, and leaving me stranded. Is it reliable enough for this?

Thank you in advance

The Fuel Star feature seems pretty reliable, but I tend to scoop at least some fuel from every scoopable star I visit. It's hard not to, since you have to fly around the star anyway. When I'm exploring, I have a large, A-rated scoop and a cool-running ship, so refueling is not an issue for me. I also have set up the galaxy-router to skip non-scoopable stars. In the past, before that feature (and the Fuel star feature as well) existed, I wouldn't worry about refueling until I was below 1/3 of a tank or had hit several brown dwarf stars in a row. Then I would consult the galaxy map to verify I wasn't getting into trouble.

Here's a tip: If you get stuck somewhere with some fuel, but not enough to get to the next scoopable star, consider crafting an FSD boost, which is normally used to increase your jump range, but will also reduce the fuel needed for a shorter jump.

And if all else fails, call upon the Fuel Rats. They are a great group and will be glad to help.

It's accurate as far as it goes, but you are correct, it only recalculates your last scoopable star when you open the galaxy map. if your connection and PC is fast enough you can do this quickly at each jump and lose no time and have an up to date last scoopable star all the time. I often turn off stars in the map, but I don't filter my route by them, it really doesn't matter that way, you see the interesting stars, but you still jump using all stars.

I've done/do all this... but I want to see all the different stars again. So if I can trust the fuel star indicator, I want to turn off the filtering...

Just remember Skye A. You can always call the fuelrats if you have a problem.

Fuel rats are definitely awesome!

Ok thanks

It is totally reliable, except when your internal fuel tank empties and suddenly steals 1t from your main tank.

As someone who has been all over the galaxy before we had that feature, fuel really is not a problem. Check the map if you go below 50%, and if there is a problem, switch to eco until you are at another scoopable, fill up and change back to fastest

For me it seems reliable in that it won't leave you without a star to refuel at. It seems overly cautious though. I've had it mark last fuel star when i could make several more jumps safely afterwards because i'm plotting scoopables only.

Ha ha, overly cautions, that's an understatement, it once told me my last fuel star was the one I was currently scooping!

What happens is, the route planner won't plot to a star at to great an angle from your intended direction of travel, I thinks it's around 20% angle, so if all the stars ahead of you in that angle are un scoopable it will have issues. It's rare, like it's only happened to me once in hundreds of thousands of ly, I just manually plotted to a handy star 90% to my current route and let it recalculate from there, no problem after that.

I frequently get the message yet the next several stars are lovely slurpable yellow orange beasties.

The danger is, you start ignoring the warning and risk stranding yourself though with KGBFOAM on by default that is minimal. With a 6A scoop in the time it takes to honk and (maybe) scan the main star I can top off my tank and never, ever, jump without enough reserve to get back where you came from.

I've just been making sure I fill up when I get the notice anyways, and tap in and out of the map when I done... it's been working so far...
