Question about Horizons & Steam.

So, I bought the base game on Steam. A few days ago I pre-ordered Horizons from the Frontier store.

Here's my question: Because of how & where I purchased my stuff, when Horizons drops, will I have access to the Horizons stuff through the Steam launcher?

Cheers for help; clarification is, as ever, greatly appreciated. :)

I believe that the Horizons content is bound to your account, so you'll have access to it no matter how you launch the game.

I'm assuming as people with the base game can continue to play after Horizon drops, anyone who has that along with Horizons will effectively have two products, each of which can be launched.

Whether they will be incorporated into the launcher, or listed as a separate product openable from that, I guess we'll soon find out (or I will, being in the Beta :) ).

** As I understand it **

Horizons Beta will not be available through Steam initially.

To get Horizons Beta (after release) you need to download a special launcher from the Frontier store. This will be found in your downloadable content area when you logon to your Frontier account via their web page.

You install the Beta through that launcher and off you go. If you have a Steam copy, I suspect your user credentials will still work to launch the game. You just can't download the Beta launcher via Steam.

I may have that wrong, but it fits in with what has been described to date.

I noticed that you used Beta a lot. :p

I should have said in my OP that I'm simply talking about the main full release of Horizons; I didn't pre-order the Beta version.

They have not mentioned the main game, but I suspect it will be handled the same. I specified Beta as those instructions have been released in a post by DBOBE.

Right... So now I'm confused. I've got Elite on Steam. I bought Horizons on the store. Is there any way for me to play Horizons on launch day? Sorry if I sound stupid here, I'm simply very confused. An apparent lack of info' from FD certainly doesn't help. :(

As of now it seems you will likely have to install the new launcher and game from FD directly after (presumably) wanting to uninstalling Elite: Dangerous from Steam, or wait for the Horizons Steam Key to install it from Steam.

Even though they are the same game with account access privileges determining what version(s) you can play, it looks as if they are going to be further divided by which launcher you have access to and from where.

Thanks for your response. This looks like something I'll have to enlist the help of a good friend with, as I'm a complete n00b LOL. :p

Again, thanks everyone. :)

Hello!

The closer the Horizons Expansion gets to release (fingers crossed...), the more confused i get about the release method for it. I bought Elite Dangerous in August from Steam, and i still cannot find any information anywhere when (and if) i can buy the Horizons Expansion from Steam. For clarification, i will not be able to buy the Horizons Expansion from the Frontier Shop - at least unless the ability to get a gift from a friend exists there; and as far as i know, it doesn't.
And then there is the confusion about the "loyalty discount", for which the Frontier Store states that it will be only available for pre-orders through the Frontier Store until December the 1st. Does that discount also applies to Steam purchasers or not when the game becomes available on Steam? (I don't care about the new Cobra MKIV and the ship paintings at all, but i'm hesitant to pay the full price for the expansion as i already bought the "base game"). Somehow i think Frontier should have made some points more transparent for their customers.

Any clarification (if possible) about all this would be appreciated.

The Horizons beta will be accessed through a launcher released only by FD. You will need to log into the frontier.co.uk website using your launcher credentials - as far as I can recall, they are the same ones you use to log into the game.

In the "My Downloads" area, you will be able to download a launcher that will not replace the Steam launcher, as the install paths will be different. When you log into it, it will prompt you to dowload whichever game mode you click on - Elite: Dangerous, Elite: dangerous Horizons Beta, or the Combat Training demo. Obviously, you don't need or want to DL the main game or combat training demo. All you need is to DL the beta.

This thread is not about the Horizons beta.

As far as I can tell, if you want to launch Horizons through Steam and purchase Horizons with the current discount, you will have to purchase it from FD. You will then have to wait until Horizons is available on Steam and get a Steam Key for Horizons from FD to install it from there. I do not believe that FD use Steam related gift options directly on their web store. If you want to use the Steam gift options for Horizons, you will have to wait until it is available on Steam, likely forgoing the current discount offer from FD.
