Question about kill contracts (from total newb)

Hi guys, total newb here (yeah, part of the swarm of new cmdrs from this weekend).

I got a question about some of the contracts to kill certain targets. Some of the assigned targets have a wanted status so taking them out is fine, but others don't, it just says "mission target" on them. I attacked and killed one of them and ended up with a load of bounty which I wasn't expecting as it was a contract target. Am I doing something wrong? how do you take those targets out without getting bounty? or is getting bounty from them just part of it?

Thanks!

Many of the assassination targets aren't wanted, so yes you will get a bounty but only in the minor faction of the system you killed the target in. It will stay as a bounty for a week and then turn into a legacy fine. All you have to do is jump out of the system once you have your kill and steer clear for a week.

it's part of it. but i'm sure the money you get from the mission is bigger than the bounty you pay.

have a close look to the systems an assassination is required in. if one is an "anarchy" one, you'll not get wanted if you kill there. for some time i only took on assasination missions in anarchy systems (anyways i'm not combat oriented, so...)- don't take those missions in systems you don't want to leave for a week, or you want to maintain a good reputation with the ruling local faction.

Also worth checking the mission text. Who are they wanting you to kill and why.

If it's a pirate lord wrecking havoc in a system and they want him stopped then he's likely to be wanted. If on the other hand he's a cult leader guilty of nothing more that singing Kumbaya over the spacewaves, then he's more likely to be clean. You get the idea.

Sometimes, especially with black ops targets - the ones where they want you to shoot down one of their own people (the scumbags!) the guy might get a bit cross and fire first. If you've still got "report crimes against me" turned on that'll make him wanted as soon as his weapons impact your ship (him firing and missing doesn't count).

I went after a pirate lord, just after getting my Cobra MkIII (thinking I could now take on the galaxy), that didn't go so well for me! barely managed to escape.
Might be a while before I go after pirate lords again!
I've been finding "the price of abandonment" ones generally have a wanted status, so I've been doing those ones. With the other ones I'll try your suggestion of irritating the guy so he shoots first. Does using a warrant scanner on them get them in a shooting mood?
