Question About Odyssey Minimum Requirements/ Build

TLDR: Anyone playing old PC (2014 for me) just fine on both Elite/Odyssey with minimum settings? How well does it do with lag and fps?

..............................................................

*hi, First and foremost, I have a 9 year old Desktop PC (2014) and I'm unable to purchase new parts save for maybe another 8GB memory card later in the foreseeable future.

**According to another website (can you run it, by system requirements lab) I might able to play both Original Elite and Odyssey no problem on minimum. Just unsure if its possible.

Since my old Desktop is 2014, I know I'm unable to play on recommended settings for both.

With that being said, is it possible to play just on low settings only for Odyssey and probably Elite? What's it's like on low settings? (I'm originally from PS4, I understand the transfer to pc has ended temporarily)

***My 2014 year old build (which surprisingly runs another PC game just fine Elder Scrolls Online for example)

Intel Core i7-3770 core (3rd gen ivy)

Gskill Ripjaw X series 8GB DDR3

Gigabyte GA-Z77m D3H, LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI sata 6Gb/s USB 3.0 micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB ( graphics card)

Windows 10, 64 Bit

You should be able to play on 1080p using the Graphics Low Preset (or maybe even medium)
Or using modified settings (and AMD FSR 1.0 if you can stand the jaggies). My PC is of similar vintage, although a bit higher specced* , and I play at 4k with settings ranging from high to low + using FSR, no problem. One (possiby big) caveat: I haven't dabbled at ground combat yet. If it can be used as some sort of indication, fleet carrier concourse stays at 40+ FPS.

*i7 4770k, 16 GB, 980ti 6GB

My backup system is a Dell XPS 8300 with 32 gigs RAM, 1st Gen i7 @ 3.6 GHZ and a GTX 960 and it runs on High Settings at 1080p with no problems except on ground missions. It drops to 25 to 30 FPS there.

I would think you could run medium and do OK with it.

8gb ram ntb with onboard graphics. fdev support said i dont meet the minimum req for running ed end yet pretty stable ody with 30fps :p

a
firmly established, fixed, steadfast
b
not changing or fluctuating: unvarying
c
permanent, enduring
horizons content was running comfortably 60fps at medium-high but fps dropped in ody, so i set fps limiter to 30 and it runs firmly, steadfast, is not changing or fluctuating, is permanent and enduring. therefore i call it running stable. but if you use different terminology you do you booboo

edit:
i dont want another post, because its pretty ot, but are you @Marvin the Martian really trying to bltch about you knowing my experience better than me? and trying to crap on it? dude...

The lowest refresh rate that I'm aware of on any monitor today is 60. That means that it is set to run at 60 FPS and does all the time. If you're not running at 60 FPS, then you aren't stable. You are not getting what the monitor is capable of and should be displaying.

Limiting yourself to 30 FPS doesn't make it "stable". It makes it "manageable" at best. You'll still miss half the frames you should be seeing, so the display will be somewhat chunky, dodgy and not smooth and fluid the way it should be.

So, no. It's not stable. At all.

There's nothing stable about only getting 30 FPS.
30 is enough to make a game like this "playable" and is the minimum benchmark for most other games too.

You may not like it but it is the industry standard, besides which a stable 30 is a better experience than a 60fps average that drops down to 30.

At the lower end of the gaming spectrum you get what you get, if that's 30 with no drops, or 60 with huge drops I know what I'd prefer, it isn't 60fps.

Hi all, just wanted say thank you all for all good samples and information. Also I don't mind playing at 1080p, in which if it works; then that's a plus.

I'm also thinking of using controller maybe my old Xbox 360 controller for windows and or PS4 controller (wired) since I'm used to PS4. I'm sure there's support for these on PC in Elite Dangerous (specs?)

With that being said, I must also add that I have no regular PC monitor save for my TCL Roku TV as my monitor for PC. It supposed to upscale my video to 4k. I doubt it though. Again 1080 is good for me :)

In conclusion I have another question. Can I play Odyssey in private server? For example like what I can do on PS4 currently. Except with Odyssey on PC.

I like to haul cargo by self and or explore without any live persons. (No offense) or does Odyssey require me be online with other live persons like am I wasting my money and missing more things instead of rather me playing solo server.

Odyssey has the same modes as the game has always had: Open, private group and solo. All three modes take place in the same galaxy (there are no seperate "servers"), it is a choice with whom the game instances you: Everyone l, only people in your PG, or nobody.

Either one seems to work - although you might have to create the PS4 controller mapping yourself (or get it from a third party site like EDRefcard).
But in either case, you should use the wired connection - or get the MS XBox controller dongle. Yes, you can connect the XBox gamepad through bluetooth, and it usually works for most games, but it will only very occasionaly work for for ED. I blame the Bluetooth vagaries.

Can I play Odyssey in private server
What is a "private server"? There is only one server for all three game modes - open, group, solo. That server then decides which (if any) people you can meet. But yes, you can play in solo in Odyssey, no changes here.

It actually is.
I played ED on XBox One S for 3000+ hours @30 fps and it felt really smooth and stable.
No, it isn't.

He's on a cheap system with 8 gigs of ram running the HD onboard graphics chipset. By his own admission he doesn't even come close to meeting the minimum system requirements for this game.

8gb ram ntb with onboard graphics. fdev support said i dont meet the minimum req for running ed

There is NO WAY he is "running stable" at 30 FPS. It's a completely bogus statement that people that didn't bother to read the thread are defending with examples that have absolutely NOTHING to do with what he said.

Focus!
He's not running onboard graphics 👇

That should be enough for 30+ fps on low or even medium preset
marvin went full biggest loser, hellbent on some terminology trigger rant, trying to make us admit he knows better than us what we are experiencing. :( 30fps that stays at 30 isnt stable but his systems that drops from 60 to 25-30 fps is running with 'no problems except'. 🤓
edit: oh im sorry. i didnt realise its not yours if it isnt your MAIN system. if its your BACKUP system its someone elses. MY BAD!
