Horizons question about rares

I am in Nguna and Biggle hub sells some rares.
I was able to get 18 rares but no more for a long time. Then lost my ship. Along with the rares.
This happened twice. I now have 18 rares again, with no more being offered.

What sort of a limit is put on the availability of rare goods?

The availability of a rare changes by state, so in a Boom state you'll have a larger allocation. But it never gets very large. That's just how rares work.

The secret to making money with rares is to put together a loop that lets you fill your hold with rares in one 'corner', then take them at least 160ly away to sell them, and fill up with more rares in the opposite 'corner'.

It's a great way to make money when you have a smaller ship, because you don't need to carry huge loads of cargo to make money.

Here's a 2-D flattened loop that I've used in the past. It still worked last time I tried it (maybe 3 months ago). Note that some of the rares are illegal in some systems, so beware of that.

Thanks for that. The rares I found are in batches of 4. I can then get more batches till they reach 18. And then the brick wall kicks in.
I think that is what Mr Piper alludes to.
Of course, 18 tons in a 208 ton hold gets a little lost in the dusty corners.
