Question about right hardware to power coming steam vr vive system

Hello CMDRs,

First of, i have read a lot of different opinions regarding this topic, but still am quiet unsure so please excuse my somehow stupid question :p

Since my current pc feels like it's dying a slow and painful death, lots of bluescreens and crashes, it is time for me to get a new rig.

Currently I'm running a i2500K with an geforce gtx 670. For playing Elite in 1920x1200 pixels on a monitor with medium to high settings and activated 1,5 supersampling the combination is still getting the job done.
But I like to upgrade to a system that is powerful enough to run ED on the vive system.

My question is, if the current generation graphic cards are really strong enough to support VR on the coming consumer versions, or if a more expensive dual card solution is necessary. I know, that it might be hard to tell, since both the Oculus and the Steam VR consumer systems aren't available yet, but I hope that you guys can give me some certainty.

The current system I'm planing to get is powered by a i7-6700 skylake and a single Asus STRIX-GTX 980Ti-DC3OC. After reading several reviews and tech reports I'm not quiet sure if the AMD R9 Fury X isn't the better card for VR. I'm not a PC tech specialist, but the reviews say, that the Fury is superior in higher resolution. Especially if I would like to use supersampling with the VR System, that might be the better choice. But the other thing is, that the nvidia system is using 6 GB ram instead of 4 on the AMD card. Isn't ram important for higher resolution textures?

Does someone have experience with both cards and might give me a hint which system is the better choice for Elite, or maybe both systems aren't powerful enough to run the game with high enough frames and supersampling. Supersampling is very important for me, because it is hard for me to enjoy the game with lot's of aliasing.

Thank you guys for your help, and again please forgive me if this was asked 100 times before,

Cheers and fly safe!

Both 980i and Fury X are great cards and will work fine in consumer VR 2016. But if you aim at VR next year, you really should wait
until you know the headset is on the way. Theres no hurry at all.

The longer you wait the more performance/dollar you will get. So the general advice is to wait and read real tests and reviews.
You should also keep in mind that next generation on GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD will start to ship in Q2 or beginning of H2. Those
will ofcourse throw out the former on perf/$ with a wide margin. So new cards incoming will obviously put serious price pressure on
the old cards before long.

So, in any case, wait atleast until Q1 16 before you upgrade any gpu. You will save alot of dollars that way,

Thanks callezetter!

So i stick to my plan and upgrade when the new generation of cards drop to the market or if my current PC finally dies before that.

Tucker Dale, There is nothing stopping from upgrading your CPU and keep your graphics cards. you will get a performance boost with a new CPU, going from the i5 2500K to the i7 6700K will give you at least 30% in performance. Here is link to a performance review test of a Fury X vs 980 vs 980Ti

You can wait till the VR headsets come out too before you make your decision. I didn't, lol, but I'm a bad example. But video cards won't be hard to come by at all, you can get them shipped like next day from online stores.

And I use a 2500k too. And it will work fine for VR in 2016. So that part shouldnt be a prio right now to upgrade.

And you can most likely hold out on the 2500k until intel release their 10nm Cannonlake processors in H2-2017, or atleast 3rd gen 14nm Kaby lake in H2-2016.
I plan to wait for the 10nm unless my pc breaks down.
