Question about running cold

Hello folks

Whenever I "go cold", my engine heat starts climbing quickly and will destroy my ship if I don't stop running cold. What is causing this?

Hello folks

Reason for this is it shuts the vents on the ship to reduce heat signature, but this causes the internal temperature of the ship to rise because your ship is essentially "holding its breath", its a tradeoff for running cold so you cant do it indefinately.

Hope that answers your question :)

If you turn off the engines in the systems (right hand) panel you'll find you cool down. You can turn everything off (life support is a bad idea though) and stay in silent running until you get bored, or someone shoots you for fun.

Rather oddly even though the point is to be hidden, you still have running lights on. Check it out near an asteroid, you'll see the light reflected back at you (be prepared to lose your ship if it rolls itno you)

You can cool it down by launching heatsinks. But I don't think you can fit a heatsink launcher on the Sidewinder.

That makes sense - thanks.

To the one about turning off the engine, that's good to know too. Not sure I would have thought of that. You can turn off your "headlights", but I've never noticed running lights. Would make sense to me that the "lights" switch would do it all...but apparently not...

It may have been changed since alpha 3 - I've not done any silent running since then. Lots of trading and dying no silent running. I kept meaning to get someone to check to see if they could see my lights, but kept forgetting. Lights definitely off in systems menu.

Each thing you have powered adds to the heat. Some you can kill and not notice (lights/cargo scoop for example) but they don't add much heat. The useful things (engine/weapons etc) are the real heat generators.
