Question about shields

I have 6B shields at the moment on the Anaconda and with 2x A0 shield boosters 666MJ. I'd like to fit 5A shields and boost it with shield boosters. If the max MJ level is the same are the shields as good? The 5A shields had a max ship mass that was lower than my ship? I could manage 5x A0 shield boosters which would give me even more power (848MJ) but as the power goes upward the max mass doesn't change.....

5A with a crapload of boosters will probably recharge more slowly than 6B, and may well draw more power.

Thanks, not worried about power as I have enough for 5 boosters and this is a trader ship. So it will just recharge more slowly? The MJ level is 20% higher than I have now and I gain another 32T taking it to 436T

If you're using boosters and your shields go down then open the module tab and switch off all the boosters until your shields come back online, or you'll be waiting even longer to get your shield on.

Your shield recharge rate is constant regardless of the shield generator and shield cell combination that you choose*, so in your case buying a class 5 shield generator and using the space you freed up for more cargo is a smart move.

*at the moment; it smells like a bug that this is the case but has been like this for a while and at worst if it is fixed you will not gain as much recharge rate as you would if you had a class 6 shield generator.

It will not let me fit 5A shields :( It states module type limit exceeded.

It's ok if I sell the 6B first though....

yeah you're only allowed a single generator. You could have purchased it in the class 6 slot (thus selling the class 6 shield generator) and used the 'swap' button to move it around afterwards.

Previously though it's removed the other generator when I've bought a smaller one...... Strange.

Anyway I did a return journey and going from 404 to 436T gives me a nice little boost to the money earning with 365K one way and 589K the other. Not quite a million return trip but not bad for less than 15 minutes. I'm about 100M off Tycoon now and just another 3/4B Cr away from Elite ;)

You can get away with an A4 Shield gen with a 5-6 boosters, it's still gives you pretty strong shields, plenty to deal with NPC's and players pirates up to a Clipper with chaff. You should be able to do that with a D8 Plant, but you'll need to run a light armament, pulse lasers mostly.

Another 16T :)

3A Shield with 8x 0A Shield Boosters gives a stronger shield compared to an unboosted 6A Shield.
