Question about suicide.

FCs are considered to be stations. So whichever you last docked at... An FC or station.

Not true all the time, it seems. I did some science and woke up at the station I was last docked before hoping on the carrier. The carrier I was on jumped already back to the bubble without me on it. Then the same carrier was close by (same system) I ended up on it though. Both experiments were in HIP 36601.

Umm. Suicide is probably handled differently to ship destruction then...

You are saying that upon suicide, you always ended up at the last visited station rather than the FC, even if you last docked at a FC?

What if the FC is your own FC?

Could you map out exactly what experiments you have done please?

1. Dock with FC, then dock with station in same system. Suicide.
2. Dock with station, then with FC in same system. Suicide.
3. Repeat 1. When FC has jumped. Suicide.
4. Repeat 2. When FC had jumped. Suicide.
Repeat with own or other player FC.

that should be the case only, if carrier owner has changed docking permissions?

I thought respawn was done at the closest station/FC. I've been killed after arrival at Shinrarta heading to Jameson Memorial and respawned at JM. I've also lost my ship in a RES site and respawned at a random FC.

Respawn at the nearest station only happens if there is a station in the current system. Otherwise it's the last station visited.

Not sure how that affects Carriers though.

I'd suggest permissions changed. My guess is the permissions check is done during the death sequence. Otherwise, one would circumvent the carrier owner's choice to block further access.

As susanna suggested, normal process is carriers are treated as stations and ship loss will result in respawn there.

To test this, anyone with a carrier can confirm.

Edit. Actually, there could be a number of reasons. If the carrier was locked down or in the jump sequence, my guess is you'd not spawn there. Or perhaps if the carrier has jumped at all. Or perhaps if the carrier has jumped and is now further away than the last station. Or the carrier is decommissioned. Or...

Lots of reasons and I'm not sure which are valid.

It seems logical to me that if you depart from a carrier then get blown up, you would respawn back on the carrier as long as it's still there; however, if in the meantime the carrier had departed and could be 2000LY away, you shouldn't respawn on the carrier but the nearest or last visited station instead. Is that how it works?

Possibly.

But I don't know of any official source that goes into this sort of detail about how carriers actually work. I read the official and unofficial faq and I don't know if this stuff is covered anywhere.

It'd be relatively straightforward to test though. I can't play currently, waiting for a replacement gpu to be sent for my dead one.

Same carrier and same permissions. For the first "suicide" test I was actually docked at another carrier in between too, forgot to bring a surface scanner (duh). The carrier was already back in the bubble before my explosion and I ended up at the last station I docked in the bubble. So it was neither the closest station or FC to HIP 36601. The 2nd time the carrier was still in HIP 336601 and I ended up on it. The last station I was docked before going on the carrier was in Colonia thought.

just do it!

also: what do you want to archieve with the suicide?

  • in ship, that gets destroyed, so your facing rebuy or a free sidey in a starter system
  • in srv, you wake up in the ship
  • in juristiction where you are wanted, you could wake up in a detention center (imho)
  • on foot, you respawn at the bar of the last visited settlement or station.
