If I buy the game via the Frontier store can I gift it to a friend or will it be bound to my store account?

At the moment you can't gift the game, only extras like paintjobs etc.
In the past it was possible but it was stopped for some reason.
For every Elite Dangerous game you buy it needs to be bought using a new Store account and email address.
Make sure you get the Elite Dangerous: CMDR Deluxe Edition rather than buying Horizons separately:

Finally, it's a shame but it's at full price at the moment, if you could wait I'm sure it will be on sale nearer Christmas.

Thanks for the replies. I'm aware of gifting via Steam but I thought it would be nice to throw in some little things from the store too.
It’s not hard to “gift” an account at all.
1. Register email address at any one of free services you prefer.
2. Use that email plus your card to buy new ED account.
3. Login w/ account and buy store things you also want to gift.
4. Send friend, wife, nephew, dog with opposable thumbs the email address, account, and login passwords.
Don’t think it saves it but if paranoid you can delete I’m sure whatever cc profile, if any, is saved with FD store / ED account you just bought.
the only drawback to this method is your giftee will have to use the email address you named for them and they may hate the email address name. On the other hand, free game is free, plus store gifts.

C'mon buddy! There are games out there with same or higher price tags which offer 20hrs of gameplay tops. The time played/game entry price ratio for Elite Dangerous is ridiculously low already. Express your love to Frontier. They surely deserve it!
That's a nice workaround jacozilla but my friend is getting a bottle of whiskey now. That was much easier to arrange.

I agree with you and have 3 accounts bought at varying price points.
But imagine if he had bought it at full price of £39.99 and TWO days later it's on sale for £9.60.
