Question about the Nebula and Stars

I have a question about the stars and nebula that we are currently seeing in the E:D Alpha release. I am sure this has been answered in another thread somewhere but I am not very good with keywords as this is a rather specific question.

Are the stars and nebula we see in the Elite Dangerous Alpha a static background painted in Photoshop and then superimposed into the Skybox? Or is it part of the actual game engine that we will be able to explore once the feature is enabled in future releases?

This is an important factor for me as I am sure it is with many others. Is Elite going to be like Space Engine (http://en.spaceengine.org) in terms travel being completely 100% seamless (no loading screens). Space Engine of course not having any real "gameplay" at the moment, more of just an engine "demo" if you will.

EDIT: Thanks for the replies, I now have a better idea of what to look for in the upcoming alpha and beta.

Welcome to the forums!

I think this should help you...

As Braben said here, real stars properly positioned.

To be used to ‘print’ the night sky skybox on arrival in a system.

I think someone from FD mentioned that the nebula from Alpha 1 was astist painted and as you say imposed onto the skybox.

One of the coolest features really :D You might even be able to select stars from your cockpit view and fly there. Theoretically the engine supports flying seamless from one system to another, but it would take ages. I do hope they have a seamless transition though hyperspace from star system to star system, like it's seen in the capital ship battle video where the spectator zooms into the system.

I also hope that the sky won't be filled with nebula everywhere. All this "space soup" in other games creates a kind of sensory overload. Except for where there are actual nebula in the milky way of course.

I seem to remember something being mentioned a while back, I could be wrong though.
I remember seamless flying between all in-system bodies being mentioned, but I don't know if seamless flying between solar systems has been mentioned.

Wasn't it (inter-solar) ruled out?
As no-one will ever manage it in the reasonable lifetime of the game, there was no point in coding for it.

No idea. Would seem kinda pointless though, even by my pedantic and perfectionist standards ;)

It was mentioned by Mike Evans as being sort of possibly possible here

For those not in the PBF -

There is nothing technical preventing you from travelling out of a system and to another providing you have all the time in the world to do so. However we're not explicitly doing anything to enable this feature either so there could be some weird rendering issues or possible crashes though it wouldn't actually be that difficult to ensure such a feature works correctly. It obviously would be a waste of time as you say given the 500m/s speed limit. At the end of the day to enable travel even from the earth to the moon in real time pretty much ensures the tech is there to handle larger distances because it's pretty similar issue, just larger scale.

I was following Alpha backer 883553 towards the planet in the capital ship scenario,he gave up and went towards the sun but at then i thought of something ;)

i didnt think of doing it right away sadly but i took pictures regurlarly(well a software did it for me) and it came up with this
727528CLOSER.gif

you do get closer, but very very slowly. that would be great if we knew the distance.
i thought about looking back at the beacon but it's out of range.
that's only the last 15 minutes, i think.

edit: another one, unfortunately followed by a crash,
419009CLOSER2.gif

i'll stop there, the game is too unstable for that right now. i start to understand why they say you cant reach those planets ;)sadly the single player freeze almost(always?) every time for me now ... it's not more stable

it wasnt long enough to be very obvious and it's definitely easier to see in 1280*720 as stars disapeared behind the planet. i would have waited longer but i had a server error and had to stop, maybe i should try it again in single player mode when i have some time ahead of me.

I'm sure there was something said about not being able to reach the planets in alpha.

Ah never mind :D

Just the visual of super fast travel during hyperspace would look cool though.

yeah but what does it mean exactly? at least we know it doesnt mean we cant get closer, you see it getting bigger, dont you? maybe it's been said because that would take too much time and "noone" is "crazy enough" to attempt it and obviously it would take hours to really get close at this rate. I dont expect being able to land on the surface if that's what you mean, but the server error is unrelated, i actually could have ignored it, at least for a while but it takes half of the screen and the only option is 'ok'(return to menu).
