Question about the Shipyard

Good day Commanders,

I've being doing a good number of trade runs over the last couple of nights and now have my Sidewinder, 2 lasers and just over 62K credits, I just need to decide whether to buy the Bay Loader or keep grinding for the Cobra ... the thing is, when I go to the Shipyard there's not much info about the ships just a Buy It button!

This leads to my question & confusion, if i hit the Buy It button, is that it and my credits are gone or will it take me to another screen where I can view the stats on the ship before a final purchase decision?

The Bay Loader might be what I want anyways since I'm a trader / explorer by nature but I'd rather know before hitting that button :D

And don't forget to sell your weapons you have bought before you buy a new ship.
Items wont get refunded if you sell the ship when they are fitted to it, and also you wont get any credits for your starter ship.
But if you buy, let say an eagle , and sell it later on you will get 90% back of the ship cost.

One question I've been meaning to ask that might be relevant to the OP. Isn't the Hauler in real trouble at some of the interdictions?

Can you just drop some cargo and get away with it? Seems like it wouldn't out run or out fight anything.

Thanks chaps, that's just what I needed to know ... glad I waited as I'm not fully convinced that I should take the Loader ... it didn't take me long getting to 62K in the Sidewinder so maybe just grind a bit longer and go straight to the Cobra.

Anybody here play the Loader a lot ?
You like it or loath it ?

You can outrun interdictions even in a hauler. Just when you drop out of space, full pips to engine and boost away. Ive been interdicted many times when I had one but didn't take a single hit from the NPC pirates.

Biggest problem whit a hauler atm is that many players se it as a target practise and are often the main target for greifers.

I assume you mean the Hauler and I'm trading away in that on the way to a Cobra. I quite like it. It feels more 'modern' than the Sidewinder, the dash looks to be more like a Ford Transit. The extra cargo means you can get profits faster but....

  • Make sure you have enough cash left over from your purchase to get a decent amount of cargo for your next trade run or it really is like starting from scratch again
  • When you do want to step up to the Cobra you need the full amount of credits, not the difference between the Hauler and the Cobra. I assume though that you could downgrade to the Sidewinder first, get the 90% of the Hauler value and then upgrade straight away to the Cobra.
  • Again, once you have the Cobra you need to think about being able to have enough cargo to trade straight away as well as the need to buy all those big guns that you are going to want to try :D

I used it a bit when it was released and it was a good ship to transport cargo.
But its slow, max 200 speed on it and it have just 1 hardpoint. So it cant fight nor defend or outrun any other player if they decide to lay a hand on your cargo. Its very fragile.
And after 2 player attacks at a space station I scraped it.
But maybe others have better experience than me of flying it :)

Did the sidewinder -> hauler -> cobra route myself.
Went from 3k profit per run -> 12k -> 28k.
Hauler was great stepping stone and only needed it for a few hours.
Made sure I had the capital when buying it to get a half-decent amount of cargo so didn't have re-grind the price of trade stock before seeing its benefits. I'd recommend it and didn't get popped by a griefer, NPC or station.

all great info men, thank you and yes I did mean the Hauler, don't know why I typed Loader ... just a brainfart moment ... maybe I should request a name change to Cmdr BrainFart, has a certain ring to it :D

might take the Hauler just for laughs, we're only testing them anyways I suppose, when the big wipe comes it's all start from scratch!

Some times, be careful, it can bug and not give you any credits back for your ship. I had a hauler and switched and didn't end up getting any credits back.

I've never experienced the 90% refund on downgrading to a Sidewinder - how many have done it and does it always happen?

This may change my credit target before going from a Lakon Type 9 to an Anaconda.... :D

I downgraded from a hauler to an sidewinder and got 90% refund of the shipvalue for the hauler. Not been able to test other ships as I lack the credits to buy any :)

I upgraded from a Hauler to a Cobra and go credited 90% of the cost of the Hauler. That way you have an extra 45 000 to buy cargo for, and less hassle.

The hauler isnt bad, its not much different to the sidewinder except 4 times as much cargo space, its speed and agility are pretty much the same.

Imo

Personally I got a Hauler, in fact I got it twice after losing one before. The thing about the Hauler is the Hull weaknesses; During overheating, you can find yourself truly panicking as the hull seemingly ticks at over 10% at a time, which is how I last lost the Hauler, so a big piece of advice is to ensure you install Heatsinks and keep them stocked.

I will say, however, that trading is almost never the best way to make profit; Even with the extra capacity, finding a trade route that both profits well and isn't patrolled by Pirates is hard to find, and taking the Free Sidewinder to the Federal Distress Signals can be a lot more profitable in time.

As for trade-ins, the only ship that doesn't refund anything is the Sidewinder; If you want to, say, trade in your Hauler later on for a Cobra or up, the best means of doing so is as follows:

1) Sell all hardpoints/utilities
2) Ensure all cargo is sold
3) Replace any armor with basic armor
4) "Buy" a free Sidewinder; This will refund your previous purchase (90%) so you can put that credit towards the next purchase
5) *Important for safe keeps* Save & Quit after getting back the Sidewinder AND your money; If you find yourself without your trade-in currency, you can* stop the process for ED, which will revert your account back to the most recent "checkpoint" event, usually the last station or Hyperjump you've done.
6) Purchase your ship and outfit, then have fun.

* - Not recommended for numerous reasons, including "breaking" instances for other players, however with the current build's condition, I find it acceptable during certain issues, like station bugs and syncing problems, as well as the obvious hangups you can get during loading out of SC.
