Question about two folders

Greetings. o7

I have a question about two folders: FORC-FDEV-DO-38-IN-40 and FORC-FDEV-DO-1000.

I know, that current version is elite-dangerous-odyssey-64, but what should I do with those two folders? Do I can safely delete it? Those both folders eats above 100GB size, so it's way too much.

And yeah, I'm using Steam version of ED.

If you delete them, and they're needed, Steam "should" re-install them. Bear in mind that the re-installation process might take up to twice as much space until done. If you currently have less than 100 GB space left, wait for info from someone with more experience.

All my games are on a 1 TB NVME RAID 0 array, so I've never had to worry about space (or load times).

Edit: Your commander is saved on Frontier's servers. Your progress will remain unless you specifically delete it from the game's main menu.

You could look at the dates on the files in the folders to see if any have changed recently, and if not they should be safe to delete.

Or if you want to play really safe, move or rename them and make sure that nothing stops working.

From what I could see last night, FORC-FDEV-DO-1000 is your odyssey install. The other is the legacy game.

I'm wondering, why those two folders was been created (which contains same files)? I don't remember about first one (DO-38-IN-40) and about second one (DO-1000), this one was been created after update 17 or 16 if I good remember.
And if I delete those two folders (which takes above 100GB, which is way too much for 512GB SSD), do they'll not return like boomerang?

If you don't have a folder called elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 in the same folder as the ones you mention then the DO-1000 one should be your Odyssey folder.

I believe that the DO-38-IN-40 folder was for v4 Horizons before the v3.8/v4 split, but since I don't have it anymore I could be wrong.

IIRC, Steam automatically installs the Legacy (3.8) version when you install the Live (4.0) version. I have no idea if it will re-install it if it's missing.

I use MinEDLauncher for all of my commanders, and it clearly shows what each folder is. I'll verify the folder names after work (about an hour).

Here's what the minimal launcher shows for my Steam install. It turns out you have Odyssey Live and Horizons Live installed. I've edited my previous posts accordingly. I hope this is helpful, and sorry if I caused any confusion :)

Unfortunately that is not always the case, it must depend on when/how/what day of the week etc you installed.

My install has none of those folders that you mention, just the elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 and elite-dangerous-64 folders, which i believe are for Odyssey/Horizons Live and Legacy Horizons respectively. And its the same folder names for FD, Steam, and Epic installs. Although my Launcher does show the folder names that you mention in your table in the bottom left of the window, but they bear no relation to the actual folders in Products. It seems that they are an internal name for the version that SOMETIMES gets carried over into the actual folder name.

It seems it depends more on what Steam decides to put on your drive at the time of install. I just checked the actual folders in my Steam install, and found:

elite-dangerous-64
elite-dangerous-odyssey-64
FORC-FDEV-DO-38-IN-40

My Frontier install only has the first two folders, and shows the same list in the minimal launcher. I'm thinking the internally-named folders are just an early screw-up by Steam. The single one I have is dated March 2023. I have lots more space to work with (I'm assuming you're tight on space), so I'll move that folder before I start playing later. I'll post another reply with my results.

For what it's worth, I have only a Frontier install, no steam. I've only installed Odyssey, and I have just one folder, "elite-dangerous-odyssey-64".

Make of that what you will.

I installed Legacy for the purpose of getting an additional 400 Arx per week, but I never bothered with it. That's the only reason my Frontier install has two folders.

I removed the "extra" folder, so I now only have the following in my Steam install:

elite-dangerous-64
elite-dangerous-odyssey-64

EDO runs normally, and Steam has not tried to re-install the folder I removed. I believe it's safe to delete the extra folders. I'll probably have to move the folder back if I ever decide to play Legacy again, but that's unlikely.

Edit: I forgot the non-odyssey folder IS Legacy. I've permanently deleted the un-needed folder.

interesting questions, about me i've 2 folders instead: elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 and FORC-FDEV-DO-1000.
the game launcher using & updating the FORC one, Steam instead keep updated the ody-64 one and if try launch ED from steam, steam ask me to link steam and ED account first.
so the working one is the FORC one.
said that the question is: how can i delete the ody-64 without issue in steam? i've already tried moving the ody-64 one in another location and game works fine , so the folder its useless for sure.

only one folder should be necessary methinks
each one corresponds to the different versions ie live and legacy i like codge only have the one installed as i don't play the other versions

the launcher has not cleaned up older versions in the past i have noticed which i manually deleted for space.......
that happened when the launcher itself was updated for me.
